My situation in summary.
- r1200 TE Ex
- 57, returned to biking last year and a looooong lay-off
- Full (9+ years) ncb for the car, live in a reasonably good area, no points
- I have no garage. Bike is therefore kept at my mothers in a locked garage (even better postcode). Alarmed, ground anchor, anti pinch pin with 19mm almax and 14mm squire lock on the rear, 16mm abloy lock on front.
- Social and commute, overnight parking at my mothers = 615 (others wanted up to 1K or wouldn't quote); on street without locks, 630, and if I had a garage at my address, would be 320 (no bike ncb, to bear in mind).

Are there any brokers out here that would be able to have a sensible conversation with the underwriter, regarding kept location, or its it always going to come down to an inflexible actuarial based quote?

I do realise that in the case of cars, a locked garage/driveway overnight parking can increase your premium over street parking.

Tried all the usual haunts?

Comparison sites
Cornmarket
MCE

Phone up a few Bike insurance brokers - cant do any harm?

It’s only a few phone calls.

Hi, yes, did all the usual. Comparison sites were coming in at even more, whilst brokers such as carole nash struggled to even get a quote. Ebike came out the best, after a quite extensive search. Just wondering if a more 'bespoke' broker might be able to help.

Carole Nash are robbing pricks.....

Do a google search for specialist brokers?

Your situation is similar to mine - 55 and 15 years off - except for having a garage.

Your car derived NCB doesn't help at all, as I found out.

I ended up with Devitt @£750 .

No pillion helped a bit, as did disclock and Datatag, but unfortunately to the ins co's you're a new rider and therefore a higher risk.

I'll watch your replies with interest :thumb.

Yes, no pillion and datatag here, also - and I realise that despite being asked for the info, car ncb doesn't help positively (though might add to the weighting if there are nay negative details). Have to say, if you have a garage at your address, you might want to try ebike next time round? Seemed competitive for a back to biking rider on that score.

What I'm struggling with is paying the same price for an unprotected bike on the street as I am with a bike protected in a garage (though I appreciate as far as the computer goes, this could simply be a lock up somewhere).

"Advanced" training/test?

see if having 'done the RoSPA' or IAM test gets a discount? :nenau
May not help this year, but perhaps next.

Phone up Cornmarket.

(BTW - they are all Brokers, unless you have found a way of dealing direct with underwriters. However - there are ‘specialists’ who may deal with your own particular set of circumstances)

Can't you put your mother's address on the V5? Then parking address & V5 address will match, thus lowering your premium. Add your mother to the policy, may even lower the premium further.

Lots of people with multiple homes use the "best" postcode for vehicle registration even when the vehicle spends most of the time parked outside a dodgy weekday pied-à-terre in Moss Side.

= insurance fraud. Well done. Good luck with getting an insurance claim paid out.

r1200 TE Ex - age and value unknown

£615 is rip-off figure to beat, if I read the opening post correctly.

OP buy a copy of MCN and, for example only, Bike magazine. Turn to the advertisements, then start ringing every bucket shop and charlatan adverting their wares. Repeat as necessary. Then do the same after you have Googled, ‘motorcycle insurance’ or some similarly brief combinations of words. There is no slam dunk easy route shortcut to rescue you from the predicament you find yourself in.

Just out of interest, what annual premium do you have in mind as reasonable to hoon your (inexperienced, no NCB) body around the countryside every day on your r1200 TE Ex, which is garaged away from where you live?

The link on the last post of this thread to The Bike Insurer claims they will beat your cheapest quote.... it would be interesting to see if that is the case.

+1 for BeMoto - you get to speak to a biker who understands the market and can have a direct discussion with the underwriters.

Nick did me a much better deal than my renewal, and because I went via 44 teeth I got the excess cover which helped reduce my premium too;

To those that have come back with helpful suggestions, I thank you - logged and will try on the forthcoming renewal.
