STOP! Please step away from the drill

I have to pop in here from time to time to read about real technical stuff. Dear me, that LC section is a joke.

Nicely done mikeyboy. My R1100S had suffered the mercy of a ham fisted amateur and will need a professional fix. Something I'm not willing to do for fear of fucking it up :D Nothing as serious as this I might add.

When does the therapeutic feeling of achievement bringing that up to sparkly state 1, become "OH FFS, will this shit never end?"

When you’ve spent 3 times your budget to achieve half of what you need, in my experience ...

Phew! thank feck for that, thought it was just me.

Having seen previous repairs to a gearbox casing by mikey and mistacat I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of this thread. Thanks for posting Mikey:thumb,

Only just seen this thread as Mike mentioned it this morning.
The sump plug repair I did as follows, Set the casing up on the mill, bored it out and tapped it to M22 x 1.5.
Machined an ally plug M22 x 1.5 and screwed it into the casing then welded it in place, Set it back up on the mill, drilled, tapped and faced it to suit the stock drain plug.
Also had to drill out all of the sheared exhaust manifold studs at the same time as a special treat.:D

I wonder where folks are going to go to get "a proper job done" in 10-15 years. I recon there's a shortage of craftsmen now
Well done and what a great advert for all concerned :clap:clap:thumby:

Brilliant job.....and I understand the concern to avoid swarf getting into the engine....

But just for my understanding....does not the oil pass through the filter prior to entering the engine? I.e. the oil in the sump is "dirty" oil right? So in theory any swarf would end up in the filter.....

This in theory is true,
But,many parts of the motor are lubed by splash ,
Pistons,gearbox etc.
If metal contamination enters the engine it can end up anywhere.
Not worth the risk for me.

Agreed and understood....just fact checking because I have only had Japanese bikes till now and was wondering that some strange bavarian magic was at play :)

Indeed, the mainstealers would just replace the part, no incentive to repair ( and no facilities too)

Trouble is some of the smaller engineering firms are pricing B&B work as premium stuff, which people typically wont pay

A friend of mine had a head skim done for his AX a while back, one place wanted £250 ...

he got it done for £25 from another place, and i believe they did his valve seats at the same time .

I appreciate everyone has to make a living, but some places just seem to defy logic and reasonable costs

After a few delays and a workshop rammed full of other stuff, I can start to get this beasty back together:cool:
Powder coater didn’t thank me much when I dropped this lot in:D
How much masking:blast

Gearbox first,!
The inside of the box was just filthy, full of black sludge,so everything is cleaned in solvent ready for dismantling the shafts
