1st off, I'd fit a front fender extender and then look at a fitting a Cymark crud catcher to protect the front of the engine then next, a rear hugger hth 
Fender extenders and Mudslings are both an excellent idea .. take a look at Nippy Normans as he has a decent selection.

Use Google or YouTube to find Machineart Moto man's video of him testing his bike by dropping it onto a concrete floor - possibly the most likely drop you might have, particularly in the early days of GS ownership.
