Yes it has to be built in to the BMW helmet. i bought a new helmet (GS Enduro) and asked dealer to fit the Communicator. It makes a neat job but in addition to not working properly with TFT/Nav I found the buttons really hard to use with gloves and it was hard to pull the charging cable out to connect to mains charger. Glad the dealer fitted it as when i rejected it as not fit for purpose the dealer could not get it out without damaging the helmet so had to supply me with a new helmet as well.
