Playing around with luggage options for an up coming camping trip. I currently don't own any hard side panniers but have a 52l givi top box, a set of Oxford throw over panniers that I bought years ago and never used, and a new 60 litre lomo roll top bag.. No sure what to use yet but considering I don't take a pillion I thought it might be a good idea to position the top box on the pillion seat so I can really load it up nice and heavy if needed, and to improve the centre of gravity.. Like the idea of having some lockable storage.

Not finished yet but I've made this plate that allows me to move the box forward and to also use the throw over panniers that don't normally fit due to the stupid pillion grab handles, I can also fit a tent etc behind the top box.. Also should work well without the top box to use with a large roll top bag, either positioned longitudinally or laterally.

I'll get it powder coated either red or black.

Good idea or not? :nenau

Like it great idea. Keep your lighter stuff behind the box , like those big hand guards too . I need some crash bars for sure . Are they the heed ones ?

Yes mate, heed.. I bought the rugged roads lower crash bars initially but unfortunately were not quite compatible with my exhaust so must pull my finger out and sell them on.. The hand guards are barkbusters blizzards.

Not the best quality photos but it's all finished and powder coated, seems to work great and even looks the part in the the flesh.

My mates pannier melted and his flip flops were alight with a similar exhaust set up, we use beer mats to cover the hole .

Ha, nightmare! I have thought that it might be a problem but have only used this setup for a couple of miles so far so not sure.. Thought about gluing a fire blanket to them bottom..

Do you think they melted because they sagged onto the exhaust (mine won't do this) or because of hot exhaust gasses (could possibly happen with mine!)?

It was a plastic pannier, the exhaust sat about an inch from the pannier base, the can was a short aftermarket jobby and the hot gasses melted the base of the pannier.

I did so thing similar myself (fitted shorty exhaust can) but on the pannier base I used some alloy to make a heat shield and spaced it off the pannier so air could pass, I would deffo put some heat proof on the bottom of your pannier

Or I might just not bother with the topbox and throw over panniers and instead use a big roll top bag along my rack and then put a PacSafe around it for security.. 😉

Can you imagine a fireman setting fire to his luggage, but seriously a large rollbag, rok straps or pacsafe, and a couple of small ammo boxes, cheap on Ebay bolted to the side for some tools etc, would do the job nicely, and no fire hazard. :beerjug:

Ha, well I tell you this for nothing, nobody at work would EVER be told about it! 😂

I've thought about ammo boxes, I even own a couple from my days as a sheet metal engineer/welder.. Probably not a bad idea, but I had it in mind that if I go on holiday to America this year I'd pick up some Tusk panniers and frames...

... Just to add, the soft panniers are nowhere near as close to the exhaust as the photos make them out, and after a short ride earlier they were stone cold and unaffected..
