I noticed a small hole in the rubber boot.
Can/should this be fixed with some type of glue or shall I take it to a mechanic to get the boot replaced?

Replace, they are not overly expensive. While you are in the process it gives you the opportunity to remove and inspect the driveshaft and lubricate its splines, if you have an earlier model without a final drive drain you can drain the final drive oil through the fill port as it will be hinged to the bottom. The whole process won't take much more than an hour depending on the tea/talk/work ratio.

Clean with alcohol-based hand-cleanser; then superglue.

Apart from sticking flesh (usually to bog-seats), this is the only decent use for superglue!

On my last GS.. I got one that looked new for £10 from Motowerks :)
