GS Basic Kalahari - some advice needed

Usually you can hear pitted cam and followers... Some crafty bastard knew what they were doing when they sold that bike..

Weird one this, we knew the previous owner, and the one before that - the bike has decent history, and I’d find it hard to believe either of the last two owners knew of this - one we know very well, and one an acquaintance but local to us.

There’s a stamp in the log book for a service at NOG in 2014, and according to the odo the bike has done less than 200 miles since then.

The oil we dropped out of it was very odd though - black and thin, and not commensurate with a recent oil change, and no metal in it.

Perhaps the person we bought it from would like to comment, but I don’t mind that this work is being done, it will be better than stock and I won’t be worrying (so much) that’s it’s going to die on a long trip

WHOOO Shiney!.......... I must compliment you on your workshop Mikey it always looks so neat and tidy like it never gets used, which quite obviously it does. :D

Nice pistons, looks like the set of M.I. / Wossner items I have set out on my bench waiting to go into my G/S.
The weep at my push rod rubbers was getting worse so while I was ordering the bits I thought I might as well do the 250,000 km old rings, and then I thought just as well to get the pistons too and do the squish as well.
I have a spare set of barrels, so the though of whipping the old ones off and the new on instantly appealed too, as to many projects seem to get lost in the shed/ sandblaster /machine shop/ whatever these days !
If they are just wondered if you had checked what sort of clearance you get with them and if I am going to need any machine work, as my local guy a three week waiting time, so I will book the bits in and postpone the work if machining is needed.
On Brit iron I used to set the piston deck hieght at zero and let the 55 thou ish thick copper head gasket set the clearance, any thoughts on how this sort of clearance will work on our airheads?
Lots of conflicting advice miaround, from no problems at 26 thou to touching at 70, although that was on an early bike at 8500 revs.

Thanks for that , when you said you had the bits back from M.I. I thought you might have just bought their pistons, saves a decent bit on the price of a kit if your barrels are good.
Or if you are willing to take the chance that they are!
With the kit no need to mess around with the squish either - if my heads go to the machine shop I will probably end up with exhaust valves and guides too , so any perceived saving will vanish PDQ!

Still awaiting engine block:confused:
Prep a few more bits :thumby:
