A mate of mine had a lucky escape Thursday night when he crashed in the fast lane of the M4. Whatever happened to his rear wheel and whether it started as a puncture is unclear but I'm glad he shaved a load of speed off before the inevitable happened. Thoughts??

Transmission/final drive lock up?

Shit. Is he ok? You're right though, it looks 'relatively' low speed by the time he was was off.

He's real lucky you were there but having video as well is a huge help.

Needs looking into...that could have all had a different outcome.

Lucky lad and fair play for hanging onto it that long !
If it was a puncture, which i think is unlikely looking at the destruction and the tyre that is still on the wheel etc, I bet he didn't need a warning triangle on the dash to tell him !!

It's not me on the bike thats recording by the way. Not sure about the rear wheel locking either as I can't see a skid mark on the tarmac. He swung by earlier and couldn't explain what happened still. I wondered if the calliper came loose and worked its way into the spokes, as it did for me once!

Increadably lucky, hope he’s ok?

Something must have jammed in to the spokes to rip them all off the hub but what? Frightening.

Wowzwers. , glad ya mates ok , looks like something has gone into the wheel from the side and ripped the spokes !

Possible that caliper came off, you can see broken lug on final drive and looks like witness marks on caliper as it clashed with spokes, hope the chaps ok,

The rear caliper bolts are one use only, you're supposed to replace them. You can see one of the bolts loose there too

Lucky man. He did well to pull it up, but I wonder if he touched the rear brake in those final moments, creating that caliper damage.

Looks like a spoke falure to me. It's amazing how quickly they can fail, once one or two let go. Some riders zip tie where the spokes cross one another to reduce damage from a failure. Many of us forget to tighten & re-torque the spokes - all the more important these days on our potholed roads. Sometimes the rims themselves crack too

Catastrophic wheel failure always makes me think of that Robert Dunlop crash on the IoM.

The bike could be less than a year old

+1 on the caliper bolts loosening and caliper going into the spokes, to cause that much damage would need a fair mass of metal, caliper seems to be the culprit, main thing your mate is Ok scary looking at the video, but its only metal and can be replaced, some mates are for life.

Looks like somebody forgot to tighten the rear brake caliper bolts properly...:(
Mechanic and Rider error not to do a quick check on vital parts before each ride...

That is horrible to watch, glad your mate survived and I hope he gets to the bottom of the failure.

My last 1200 twin cam had a recall to check the rear wheel drive flange. They had a few fail due to them cracking where the wheel bolts go through.
