I have an old pc running Vista, which works fine. All support for Vista has now been withdrawn, including Microsoft security essentials, it seems. Any recommendations for free anti-virus and security? I've used AVG in the past, but even that became a problem eventually, although I can't remember why!

It's time to upgrade your operating system. If you don't want to pay for Windows then convert it to Ubuntu or something like that.

Whilst I applaud you wish to keep your system alive, connecting it to the internet is just going to make a security hole into your household even the early forms of linux that may run on the system may themselves pose a similar problem.

Only surpassed by Windows Me, and today's Windows 10 non professional versions.
I still run XP for my day to day work with as solid state hard disk & AVG free.
I have Windows 7 (locked so it will not upgrade to 10) on my occasional computer I use when XP will not do the job.
Permanently on to internet, I never have problems, but then again, I do not visit porn or football websites.
Most security breaches are caused by users clicking on silly things.

Thanks for all replies! I appreciate it's stone-age technology, and I'd happily change to ubuntu, but I need itunes and some other stuff which I don't think is compatible. I detest that microsoft has such a monopoly, and as such, can do pretty much as they like. My other half bought a brand new notebook a year ago, which recently ground to a halt under the weight of shite updates which it said there wasn't room to install. My geek computer mate said they just constantly loaded on top of each other without deleting the previous update until there was no space left. There was also all sorts of shit in the bios to try and stop him changing the os, which fortunately he managed to get passed. She's on ubuntu now, no problems at all.

Ubuntu is the least geeky Linux OS but you’ll need to do some searching to see how to use your iTunes stuff.
It also needs s powerful enough machine. A Vista box is likely to be too slow to work acceptably. You can test compatibility by running it from a disc.
I bit the bullet years ago and went to Apple. I still run the same MacBook with no problem. Over time, it’s cost me less than the designed to fail Windows machines.
