A quick summary---
2012 GSA with 56000 miles up it....
Bike in with BMW park Lane for 5 weeks getting a final drive unit replaced (It's a very long story)
Picked it up on Saturday
Out for a ride on Sunday, engine cuts out whilst moving on a straight road
Side of road investigation of symptoms= bike won't start, occasionally get EWS and/or alarm starts sounding as soon as ignition is turned on (this may be because the kill switch was in the off position at the time?)

Get bike recovered to home
Buy replacement ring antenna, do the slave thing, bike starts and runs happily, start to ride to MH Motorcycles to get the RA swapped, engine cuts out again & won't now start no matter what.

When i say won't start I mean it won't turn over...

I'm going to have a look at the loom around the head stock this evening, any clues or suggestion very gratefully received!

Flat / dead battery

I wouldnt mind betting the ews fault was related - and may not be faulty ;)

i did think about that, however I ruled it out as it hasn't had any problems turning over/starting until the Sunday. It started just fine when i picked it up from BMW (They may have had it on a charger) and on the Sunday...

I'm happy to put a new battery in it just on the off chance....if needed?

battery info from the tracker around the time it packed up....

Could be dirt in the ignition switch contacts causing an intermittent fault?

Loose battery terminals (unlikely) ?

Serious wiring fault causing Ecu to shut down on-bike systems ?

My wiring loom got quite badly chafed in the bundle alongside the airbox and battery. The damage was taped up and thankfully no harm was done but I only discovered it by accident.

The least cost option is to unwrap the loom and see what you find.

Ditto, especially the main power cable that runs there (for rear ESA motor IIRC at about 4mm cross-section) got corroded after the outer sleeving got chafed through on the battery box edge. I had to chop out the affected section and crimp repair then heatshrink . Maybe a common issue on 2008 GSA if we both had it ??

Update, the problem was a blown lower ignition coil, apparently, the canbus won't let the bike run with only one coil........

Now sorted, massive thanks to Coppers BMW in Tunbridge Wells. They took it in, diagnosed and sorted in in one day. Highly recommended!!!

FYI i do have a spare charged battery if needed, just down the road too.for another time.Coopers are good .

Well that doesn't sound right!
Checking for failed coils involves disconnecting primary or secondary coils and running the engine.

I can only describe what happened and how it was fixed, I'm just happy to have it back 😁

Any warning signs when you look back? Anything specific cause the failure that you know of? Would be interesting to know in case it comes up - I've had the RA problem as well so would also have thought it was that

About 6 weeks ago it cut out once whilst on the move, no errors on the display, after 2 minutes at the roadside it started again. Didn't get a chance to check for logged errors. That was it. Did 250 miles on it today and all is good ;-)

When trying to deduce if my primaries were failing I ran the bike happily for miles with the secondary coils disconnected. However, shorting out a coil should cause the canbus to switch it out on over-current. That might mean they all get switched out.
