Oh dear.......

“They have discovered a fault in the production of the model, which could cause problems to customers, and have decided to halt the launch, test rides, purchasing and production of the model. This must be costing them a bomb, but they have done so to protect riders and prevent greater problems- Bravo! There is a part of me that truly believes many other brands would not do this.”

Fuck me, talk about blinkered :blast

FFS if BMW actually bothered their Corporate arses to properly test their products before releasing them to the general public f*ck ups like this would not occur, witness buyers of the original r1200 gs models who's bikes suffered total final drive failures before the bikes first service or the r1200rt wc rear shock debacle etc etc .

This model range originally pencilled in for production and release in 2017 but delayed for unspecified reasons on at least 2 previous occasions has obviously never been fully and comprehensively tested before someone signed off on the final production.

It should never have got to this stage where BMW are forced to disappoint customers (AGAIN) , it matters not a jot about them promising to fix everything and having a wonderful warranty system.

As for other brands not doing this ,possibly they would not have let the bike get to this stage before fixing the issues rather than using the public as beta testers (AGAIN)

I first saw the new four valve boxers being tested at der Nürburgring in October 1991 ... the circuit was closed at the time but I sneaked in at T14. I nearly got 'arrested' when I got my camera out.

At home I saw Shaun at Rainbow Motorcycles and told him I wanted one, their first one, in red.

The R1100RS wasn't available until April '94 .... a further two years of testing! I had a red one. Shaun gave me this watch with it ...

Don't see it?

Now you do ...

They don't test'n develop them like they used to do!

Great story Mick
No they don't test them anywhere as much they used to

Does harm their advertising that’s for sure .

Sod any mechanical / manufacturing issues they may be having, as far as I'm concerned the design team should all be sacked and sent to work for Kia. It truly is one of the ugliest, incoherently designed modern bikes I've seen in years.............

Don't be so sure, this WBM brand loyalty thang runs deep. It's beyond me but it really does.......

I'm joyous in the fact that I'm off the merry-go-round and not in the market for a new bike. There's nothing out there that interests me.

Well, another field day for grumpy old men.

I suggest you guys buy KTM. They don't do recalls.

Thats why one guy had to be without his new 1290 for 7 weeks, with no loaner offered, or another friend of mine that got his engine filled with water when he tried to gross a low waterlevel ford due to a leaky airbox. The bike was less than a year old. And no offer or reaction from KTM. All he was offered was the bill for the pickup of bike and the repair…

The KTM790 Adventure was also shown at shows last fall, and I thought it may be a good alternative. But when I dropped by the KTM dealer, there was no 790 Adventure in sight, nor could they suggest any date soon.

Besides, learning from my friends experience, it does not seem like I would be happy with the way KTM treats their customers. But I guess the customer part may be different from different countries.

Why on earth would KTM pay anything, he rode the bike through water :nenau

The bike hasn't been launched yet. Official pictures have only just emerged in the last week, whereas the BMW was launched, then it wasn't, then it was, and now it's back on hold.

How on earth can you justify such loyalty to BMW after this appalling performance?

Re: Riding throgh water.
The waterlevel was 50 - 60 cm, and the water leaked through a leaky airbox. This has been a known issue with KTM, and yet they do nothing about it. The 1190 is markedet as a bike with offroad capability. Surely it should be able to handle so water splashing. The water did not enter through the airintake. It entered through the leaky part.

I realize that BMW does not do everything perfect. But the way they handle customers and acts when a problem occures put them in a league of their own (at least in my country)

A couple of examples: A friend of mine got som awfull noise in his engine (F800GS) after 4 years of heavy offroading and 60K km. New engine installed, courtesy BMW, the bike was back on the road in 2 weeks.
Another guy got a new rear ESA shock,(1300GT) bike was 6 years old and 60K. There had been a issue when the bike was new.
He always does his own services, and the dealer knows it.

.........................

I call complete and utter bullshit.

Firstly the airbox 'issue' has affected a very few bikes in hot, dusty climates that are ridden off road a lot. The issue was dust ingress into the clean side of the airbox.

The airbox is mounted above the engine, directly under the tank. How on earth would riding through 60cm of water allow water into that space and THEN into the airbox. Water could possibly get in through the intakes but I can not see how it would ever enter an airbox the way you have described

Regardless, water ingress into an engine is not a warranty issue whether it's a full on enduro bike or a road orientated Adv. bike. What does your mate expect :nenau If that's your example of BWM customer service V KTM I think you need to find a much better example.

Anyway, have a read of this Ride Report LINKY. You'll notice that an 1190R is involved, my mate's. You'll notice pictures of it crossing rivers just a little bit deeper than 60cm. You'll notice it going for a swim. You'll notice it had no issues ............ at all ............ not even I little bit.

Ohwell.
I didn't repair the bike. I just know that the water did enter the engine, and it did not enter through the air-intake.

And the leak may be small, but at least two of my friends had to fix the airbox on their own expence. No interest what so ever from KTM.
I guess we all have different expectations from our dealer. ..
But as long as everyone are happy that is great .

Best stick to stuff you know about then :thumb

Indeed.

You carry on buying your bikes based on your perceived level of customer service.

I will carry on buying my bikes on whether they are the bike I want to buy or not.

My wife took the F750GS out on Saturday from Alan Jefferies, no recall on that bike. Although there is a recall on the F850 its also available for tests, I have booked it as a loan bike while our F700 is serviced next thursday. Delivery dates were quoted as end of August.
Last Saturday an owner on an alternative forum took delivery of an F750GS.
These bikes are really good to ride and I hope this blip is sorted easily.

Yes, that is what I do. I know that the bike got water into the engine, I know that the water did not enter through the air-intake, I suspect the bike should be able to handle it, i.e it should not be that way, and I know that KTM did not take any responsebility for a fault to a bike that was less than a year old, I know that the owner was stuck with the bill, and I know that I think that sucks.

And so do I.

I have absolutely no desire to own a KTM.

The one I tried had handlebars that where girl sized, so it must be a girls bike.

I do not care for the way they look, and at least in my country they treat their customers with great disrespect.

To conclude then.

We both get the bikes we like, and we are both happy (at least I am). That is at least one (perhaps two) out of two.

I think that is pretty good. :beerjug:
