Hi im looking for some help with a problem I have with a 2000 R1150GS
I bought this bike back in 2008 with only 7000 miles on the clock, I used it up until 2014 and it never gave me as much as a days trouble.
For personal reasons the bike lay in my shed from 2014 until last September (2017) when I decide to put it back on the road, I brought it to a BMW specialist an got a full service, all oils filters and brakes, valve clearances etc.
After collecting the bike I rode it home but only got about 35 miles and the bike stopped along the roadside, tried to restart it, bike would turn over but it sounded like it was not getting any fuel. After 10 mins or so and the bike cooling down it restarted and I completed the journey home, another 25 miles and all was well.
It would start and idle ok, but i could not depend on it. Brought it back to the mechanic and he diagnosed it as a Hall Sensor problem. At a cost of 300 I got the Hall Sensor replaced and once again set off on my way home.
This time I only got 10 mins on the road when the bike stopped. The mechanic came out to me and after a few mins he disconnected the Throttle position sensor and got the bike to start. Put the throttle position sensor back on and I went on my merry way and made it home no problem.
I put a further 300 miles up on the bike with no issues and then I decided to upgrade to a 2008 R1200GS which I now love.
I sold the R1150GS and after a couple of weeks the buyer (a friend of mine) contacted me to say he was on the side of the road the bike had just made a loud bang out of the exhaust and he had lost all electrics. After about half an hour hetried the bike again, it started and ran fine.
He rode the bike for another week without any issue and then when he was an hour from home the same thing happened, loud backfire no ignition and stuck on the side of the road.
I brought the bike by trailer back to the mechanic who said it sounded like an ignition wiring problem. Checked that out but no issue found, he has checked other connections but cant find any problem. I now have the bike back and it starts first time, I have had it out for some short spins with no issues.
At this stage the buyer doesn't want the bike back until he can be assured that it wont let him down again!!! (I cant blame him).
I just dont know where to go from here, any help would be appreciated.
p.s, The bike has only 25,500 miles on it at this stage.
