Its been along time since I even thought about advancing/retarding ignition.

I'd always understood that you retard the ignition to start and then advance it fully when on the move (with a possible retard if the engine isunder particular load).

However, in the starting procedure for my WLA it says:
Spark control (left) grip must be turned inward to fully advanced position, or nearly so,

What say you?

Feck knows but it's a slow day at work so I Googled it and the following link is an interesting read even if it doesn't answer your question directly

LINKY

It did cross my mind that you are reading the manual to mean 'advanced ignition', could it possibly just mean that the left grip is 'turned inward' as far as it will go?

That is incorrect...I've checked.....to start the bike, fully retard I.e roll the grip forward as if you are closing a "left grip" throttle.
Just what I thought.

The US WD manual does have a disclaimer on page 3:
*To provide operating Instructions with the materiel, this technical manual has been published in advance of complete technical review.

Any errors or omissions will be corrected by changes or if extensve, by an early revision
