Could hardly believe my ears when the well-groomed and well-dressed young man at the parts counter said "€79 including the VAT" after checking the price of a set of rear brake pads for my 1150...

€19 for EBC from Cotters in Ballymount...

What's going on? I had been considering Duffy for doing some work on my bike before my trip in September, but if they charge 4x the normal price for rear brake pads, what the fuck will they charge for working on the bike?!

To be honest,
i'm surprised you're surprised :D.

... then on the other hand, for all the "joys of internet shopping" i've often checked Motorworks / Motobins prices and by the time you add postage it's cheaper to go to Muddy Paddocks / sorry ~ Paddy Maddocks for it!

I find it hard to beat Cotters for most things - often sent Trainees there and Simon will do a deal for kitting them out, head to foot. :thumb But some things we must endure the 'Specialists' .

I’ve got to say I’m a fan of Duffy’s. Did they over charge for the pads or charge the correct list price? They just charge the price on the computer. Try buying pads for a bmw car or an Audi. Of course the local factor has them cheaper. That’s always been the way. Nothing new in that. I’ve always found Duffy’s helpfull. Phone contact is a disaster. Phone up auto answer press 1 for bmw 2 for mini 3 for bikes. Press 3 and lady comes on phone I ask for bikes and 9 times out of 10 it’s a recording. If it’s something I can do without i hang up. I wasn't surprised that they were more expensive, it was how much more expensive that got me.

Do lads really pay BMW prices?

Platinum has been on my radar for working on my bike, but after speaking with Mark a while back, it seems he won't do any non-standard stuff. In addition to curing the weep from (what appears to be) my transmission shaft seal, I want some non-BMW levers fitted, and a Fuzeblock and some non-BMW 12V sockets.

If Mark wont do it I cant see Duffys taking it on. At their prices it would be madness even to let them near anything that has potential to over run on time. JJH

Robbie, Mototechnic - even more local to me and well used to Euro Bikes and i'd personally recommend him. :thumb2

I remember ringing Duffy's back in around 2012 when I had the 1150GSA. It needed the 24k service and they quoted me €120 per hour labour (over €600 all in). Needless to say I brought the bike up to Mototech (http://moto-tech.biz) near Lisburn and I think the service cost me around £200. (I'm not sure was Platinum MC around back then)

I'd highly recommend Mototech if you are up North. Leave the bike with him and take the train into Belfast for the day.

I price any work needing done with Duffys and Hursts in Belfast.

Depending on the exchange rate, and sometimes they have a different views on labour rates and different charges, it’s worth bouncing them off each other.

For charging 4x the going price for rear pads, Joe Duffy would need to be the only place open in Dublin for me to go to them again.

Brake pads and bulbs are probably the worst things to use for main dealer price comparisons.

No idea why.

The Brembo distributor are down in walkinstown in off the end of the Greenhills road, if for some reason that you feel EBC would not be up to the job.

They wanted to charge me over €400 a few years back for a gearbox leak repair. I said show me where it’s leaking, and they replied the apprentice had washed off the evidence, when would I like to book it in?
I said I would monitor the leak myself. Lo and behold, no leak ever materialized.

That’s fraud. Plain and simple.
