I’ve got a small amount of wheel bearing play after fitting new bearings. I’m not sure of the thickness of the ‘wedding ring’ spacer that I used but before I strip it down has anyone got a formula for adjusting the tapered bearings or do you just use trial and error with a selection of spacers? It would save ordering some thinner ones only to use just one or I could machine mine a tad thinner but by how much?

You set them to a torque value to do it properly. They are quite a bit tighter when you torque them to what they are when you set them by wiggle

Thanks. This was helpful. It seems as if selecting the correct shim/band is trial and error but the values for the extra torque needed is useful.

Not so much trial and error, just a case of measuring the adjustment shim and dropping down a size till the play is gone.
Does help if you have a linbin full of spacer shims:D
If you can measure what you have I can send you a few smaller ones:thumby:

Thanks. That’s really helpful. I’ll pm you when I’ve measured it.

Read somewhere that you when you do it by reducing shim size you want 20 ft/lbs torque in the axle nut when you are testing.
Undersize wedding bands and a stack of 2 thou shims are around - the US specialist BMW tool supplier has them.
You probably do not want any more than 2 thou preload on the bearing if you do it this way.

Not so much trial and error,

Yes quite, meant to say fit and trial. I did buy a torque screwdriver especially for this and made up a dummy spindle/spacer per the instructions out there on t'internet, once I had all the ingredients it was actually way easier then it seemed.

This is from the g/s tech manual

Thanks Rob. I’m putting off this little job until the temperature subsides. My workshop is like a sauna at the moment.
