I too ran my mother’s renewal past a few websites and call centres. There was no real shortage of alternatives for an 80+ woman, widow, clean record, no claims (touch wood), driving for 60 plus years living in Stratford upon Avon. But, she has a basic Up, not a brand new Jaguar. OK she could do monumental amounts of damage with it and to it (heaven forbid) but there’s one hell of a difference in at least the impression (and value) a Jaguar creates in an underwriter’s mind over a simple Up.
We could have gone a bit cheaper than the final price we agreed with Saga (they did come down from their opening shot to about £320, so under a quid a day) but, as a renewal, we avoided another load of form filling to switch insurer, which we couldn’t be arsed with.
