Hi all,
I’m a very happy owner of a 3 year old 800 GSA, bought a fortnight ago. Bike has only had RIS and one more service in late 2016 @ 4500. It is now on 10600 and well overdue a service. I was gonig to get a 12k service done now at same time as MOT at my local independent who used to be a min dealer and all the techs are trained by BMW.

Question is , is it worth me getting valve clearances done now, or should I really wait until it clicks over 12k, which might not be for 3-4 months yet?
Main dealer wants about £550 for service and valves, the indie about half of that.

Thoughts/experiences please?

Cheers, marty

We were told unofficially that its very unusual to adjust the valves on an F7,8 bike. I had mine checked at 18000m and the dealer was happy to stamp and warranty the service book. These are our 2nd F series bikes and in 36000 miles each the valves have never needed adjusting.
Your quote seems a bit steep for the service. I get mine done at a main dealer (Allan Jefferies) the following price was for a 36000 service on an F700. carried out 30/6/2018
Service 27.50
Oil change 11.00
Gasket 0.96
Filter 13.35
Check valves 55.00
O ring 1.13
R/C Gasket 58.75
Replace plugs 5.50
Plugs x 2 15.92
Replace air filter 5.50
Filter 19.78

Total £214 +VAT = £257.00

Three things reduced the total, the bike is over 4 years old so qualifies for a reduced labour rate, I purchase oil vouchers 4 services for £99.00. and we don't go for the big extras the dealer try to force you into Fork oil change and brake fluid change.

One last thing, the Indi servicer may try to re use the rocker gasket. This is a hit and miss item but is so annoying for dealers having to fix a leak later they now fit new every time.

Jefferies have always been pretty good and fair over the last 10 years of 800Gs ownership, even though I needed a new ecu after 8 years. My brake pads have lasted longer than an ECU !

Very rare that the valve clearances need any adjustment.

At the risk of boring good folk on here, at 137,000 miles the valve clearances on my 2008 F800GS have never required adjustment. They are all bang on halfway between max/min permissible. Original cam chain and clutch :thumby:

My 08 16000 miles clearances checked today all but on tight and getting adjusted!

It's because of you I'm probably going to keep my F700 to rack up another 60,000 over the next three years...

Git.
