Advice on best free anti-virus

Never ever pay for Antivirus, it's just a big con.
Windows 10 comes with Windows Defender built in which is in my opinion just as good as any other Antivirus software out there, plus it's written and maintained by Microsoft who are probably going to have a pretty good idea what should and shouldn't be on a Windows based PC
If you want to go a step further, I'd recommend using a modified HOSTS file to block a lot of known malware distributing sites. Here's a good starting point on that note: http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm
