Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good specialist in Herts, Bucks or Beds? I have just bought a 39,000 mile R1150GSA in need of a service and having read your comments about the rear bearing I would like to get this checked out at the same time.

I have had the bike for less than a week, done approx. 500 miles and in the last few days it has got harder to start from cold, now failed to fire at the last attempt, the battery turns it over quickly and I can smell fuel. I think I will fully charge the battery, clean the plugs in the hope it will start so I can ride it to the specialist.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. :thumby:

Thanks Mikeyboy, it would be easier to go to Luton as the bike will need brake fluid change, a full annual service, check the rear bearing and the starting issue and if I have to leave it overnight it's easier for me to get home, unless you collect and deliver?

And don't forget the ESSENTIAL job to do any ANY used 1150, to check out that gold-durned fault-prone hydraulic clutch Slave Cylinder.

Thankfully, on a naked bike like a Rockster, it's only a couple of hours' job to get at it. Not much Tupperware once the tank is off, two pivot bolts, one each side to loosen for the slight tail-up lift, and only four fixing bolts for the rear frame to raise it a bit to ease access by removing the crossbar.

So it's tank off, foot-pegs off and left dangling, rear brake caliper and wheel off, silencer off ( often a bit of a PITA with rotted clamps to deal with ) and then the shocker off.

There is no need whatsoever to remove the fuel tank or raise the rear subframe to change a clutch slave cylinder.

Thanks Steptoe that's a relief. I was starting to wonder what I've done buying one of these bikes!

The bike has main agent history, taken from invoices shows; inspection and annual service @10414 miles, annual @ 10842, annual @ 16384, annual @ 18134, annual inspection and paralever bearings @ 21707, annual inspection (30,000 mile service) @ 27315 (August 2101). There is no showing of spark plug change on the invoice, so I suspect that they need changing as the mileage is 39,990. The MOT history verifies the mileage. What would you recommend? I live in Herts, work near Kingston in Surrey.

Well if you work in Kingston and are happy to ride it into town, take it to Steptoe as he’s not a million miles away from you’re work.

I have ridden down to him in preference from Herts on many occasions

Steptoe says : - "no need whatsoever to remove the fuel tank or raise the rear sub-frame to change a clutch slave cylinder".

Yes but, yes but.....I take your point about the tank, but when accessing the slave:-

What about having to ferkle out the contaminated gearbox input shaft Output Seal and replace it with the new orange one ? Can you do that with the X-bar in the way ?

And I took the tank off because I wanted to do other work beside replacing yon pesky slave cylinder. Like accessing the lower-plugs coil unit.

Steptoe is obviously a legend :bow but always keep Steve Grover (Motoscot) near Luton in mind as well - nothin’ he don’t know
