2010 GSA rear wheel cracking advice

good afternoon all, not the greatest 1st post but here goes!

purchased a 2010 adventure model privately about 2 weeks ago. everything is in excellent condition but worryingly I have just spotted some hairline cracks around the bolt holes in the rear wheel. to me it looks like a previous owner or tyre shop have overdone it when reinstalling the rear wheel (possibly with an impact gun). i can't find anything anywhere about someone with a similar experience, (most cracks around the rear wheel seem to be the mounting hub problem).

my question is, has anyone seen this, or experienced this before? and am i likely to see these cracks worsening through normal use and the correct torquing?

obviously if it is imminently ready to go pop then i will replace, but BMW wants £909 for a new wheel and a breaker wants £450 for a used one. my understanding is that the wheels are intended for off road use and are over engineered accordingly?

my current options seem to be:
1)leave it as it is and keep a close eye on it
2)buy the breaker wheel assuming it is absolutely solid
3)swap to alloy wheels (I'm unlikely to take my own bike off road, ill use the off road school's for that!)

450 is a bit steep for one second hand wheel........I could be wrong but that's normally what a set go for on here when they do show up for sale.

Run option 1 and have a reasonable road side assistance sorted out. Pay your £12 and either keep an eye out on here on the sales threads or run a wanted ad; or both. Something will come up.

I run alloy wheels. They weigh no more than the wire wheels and don't suffer with spoke hole corrosion. You could consider having it rebuilt but parts alone are costly as everything is special. Labour costs are high because nobody but a really special specialist will touch them.

You could have the cracks TIG welded and the bolt holes machined but it would be a special job and probably no guarantees.

If you go for alloys, you can get them refurbed at any alloy wheel repair company. Mine were done in 2014 in gloss black and still looking good.
 
Are you certain the alloy is damaged, the pics just look like the top surface of powder coat has cracked. The countersink shoulder looks okay when viewed on my phone screen ?

I would be worried about using that wheel. I THINK that the alloy wheel has the same dimensions. You must use wheel bolts to match. There are plenty of breakers out there so shop around. JJH
 
What does the others side look like. The pics are high quality and I could see the cracks disappearing right down into the bevel shoulder. Of course there will be damage that is invisible to the naked eye too.


I’d not feel comfy riding around with that damage, it just takes one pothole to get them crazing even more.
 
the rest of the wheel is absolutely perfect, its just the stress fractures you see in the photos that really do look like they have been caused by seriously over torqued bolts, the worst of the cracks is visible around 1/3rd of the way into the 'V' of the bolt hole, most of them are just cracking and showing the stress on the outside of the casting. but as you say oldrat, i'm worried that a bad pothole could get me in some serious bother, especially as i'm not one to hang around, and i like clattering around the badly maintained b roads which is why i bought the gs in the first place!

i suppose i will keep my ear to the ground for a replacement rear (I like the look of the wire wheels and one rear wire wheel seems to be about the same as a set of alloys anyway, and that's before powder coating them black to match the bike...)

I think i was just hoping that someone has had the same issue and has continued to ride hard on it since with no adverse effects...
 
I'd take the wheel off, and pop over to Bahnstormers in Alton

Get then to have a look and confirm either way. If kaput ...

Did the bike come with a warranty?? if so i'd be looking to take it up with the warranty co.

But i wouldnt use the bike until you get a proper diagnosis

You need to have it confirmed that it is in fact damaged

As has been suggested Bahnstormer Alton could do this for you and dependent on their opinion I'd be taking it up with the individual who sold it to you :thumby:
 
Those are cracks. It matters not that they are not on the load-bearing surface of the hub - they can still propagate there.

In the short-term - I would get the cracks ground out with a die-grinder, and look out for a new wheel.

An allow wheel refurbisher should be able to do that, and dye-pen afterwards. You may just choose to keep the wheel afterwards.

Looks like it's been over-torqued, but without blasting away the paint it's difficult to see precisely what we are looking at here in terms of structural damage.

There are plenty of specialists dealing with car alloy repairs, but we all know the impact of a wheel failure on a bike at speed........ & quite frankly it doesn't bear thinking about, so IMHO, if in doubt, adopt a better safe than sorry approach. Bite the bullet, replace & complain bitterly to the vendor (hopefully not of this parish).

If it was "sold as seen" there won't be much point in complaining.

precisely my issue. i'll admit its very frustrating and i don't want to ride around on a failing rim. in my limited opinion the cracks would be fine for a fair while. but i plan to keep the bike for a few years and I've just decided to get a wheel off a breaker bike so i don't have to stress about it. ill either flog the wheel as it is or turn it into a seriously heavy and overpriced clock...

the guy i bought it off i think said he was a forum member here but i might be mistaken. he had only had the bike a month and a bit previously as he'd taken it as a trade for a Honda or something if my memory serves. I hope that he didn't sell it to me in the knowledge that the wheel was buggered but who knows. the rest of the bike is in excellent condition but i'll be going over it with a fine tooth comb a couple of times to make sure nothing else has been hulked back together! so far i'm confident its just a bad tyre fitter that's run the bolts in with a impact gun.

thanks everyone for the inputs anyway, so long as the new wheel arrives by the weekend ill be back on the bike and hoping for a fair few thousand miles before i have to park it for a different issue!
