Hi, has anyone ran their F800 GS without the oil cooler connected to the cooling system ?

The hot oil to water is the most compact and efficient method of removing excess heat. The sump has no cooling fins and is masked by the exhaust pipes and sump guard so the oil will get very hot without additional cooling.
It should be possible to remove the heat exchanger and replace it with a purpose made adapter to divert the oil through a radiator. This will be quite large and more prone to damage than the original. Without a thermostat the whole engine will take longer to warm up.
If you are in the middle of a long tour and suddenly spring an internal leak causing the oil and water to mix it should be posible to disconnect the water pipes, plug the open ends and carry on but makeing regular stops to let the oil cool.
