Autumn Alps Oct 18

Incredible photos of what looks like a cracking trip.

I'll bet there was some old school excitement felt when you arrived at your mate's motorhome after travelling there.

That was a beast of a tracked snowplough.......got to ask....how does the snowplough driver manage to drive to work ? :D :D

Cracking pictures !!!! What camera have you used ?

I took my FujiFilm X100 but a lot of the pics where taken with my iPhone 6.

Great ride report, lovely pictures, Autumn is really the best imho for pictures, portable jump starter comes to mind for the next trip......

We had a portable jump starter... me and my long legs! :D

We push started the Bandit off the Susten and rode towards the Furka. Above 5k rpm it was fine but below this Dave had multiple warning lights flashing and loss of power. We thought we would head to Andermatt and consider our options there.

I stopped to take a photo of the road wiggles on my SatNav and Dave came flying past at about 11k revs before grinding to another stop. :(

It was pushed started again on the Furka and we made it to Andermatt stopping at a cafe with a collection of Bm and Guzzi riders sitting outside enjoying the sunshine. Dave certainly turned a few heads arriving in a hail of inline 4 Jap noise as he revved the nuts off it. :D

After lunch we decided to nurse it back home over the Susten and we push started it again down Andermatt high street. :rob

We made it back to base in one piece and to celebrate Manchester Barry let me play with his remote controlled mini lawn mower!! :bounce1:bounce1

Seems you had a cracking time anyway, and that is more important, at least Dave was going downhill...............at some point.

My last full day was the Saturday and with Dave (now called Smokey) and the Bandit safely back at base I set out once more on my own. I'd watched the latest 44 Teeth episode on YouTube and the speeding fine was certainly savage. :(

Only saw Coppers out once during five days and that was outside the town of Wengen on a 80km limit stretch of very straight road like this one.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/151886996@N06/45491505691/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_0753 (Edited)"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1957/45491505691_03fc0fc2c2_c.jpg" width="800" height="600" alt="IMG_0753 (Edited)"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Most radar traps appeared to be positioned on the exit of some tunnels but no Police visible on any of the passes. Another added bonus of the time of year was also no caravans or coaches. Just fast cars and bikes :thumb2

So early Saturday morning I went back up the Grimsel and headed for the Nurfenenpass (not so well known as the others but equally as good fun).

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/151886996@N06/43674747120/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_0721 (Edited)"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1950/43674747120_4247a33d32_c.jpg" width="800" height="600" alt="IMG_0721 (Edited)"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Lake on the Grimsel.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/151886996@N06/44577540665/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_0725"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1932/44577540665_5af9f4b8d8_c.jpg" width="800" height="600" alt="IMG_0725"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

These two raced by me going up the Grimsel. It was worth being behind them just to hear the audio. :p

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/151886996@N06/44577548655/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_0727 (Edited)"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1938/44577548655_2a6e42f0b4_c.jpg" width="800" height="600" alt="IMG_0727 (Edited)"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Ascending the Nurfen.

Planned to go to the Lake at Interlaken later that afternoon so turned round at the Nurfen summit and headed back down towards base crossing the Grimsel again.

Guess what time of year I'll be taking my next Alpine Bike holiday. :D

Thanks for looking.

:beerjug:

I’ve done the Pyrenees in the autumn before and had similar weather but equally never considered the high Alps as I thought particularly the main passes would be all closed and it would be too cold.

Great pics and stunning weather, glad you had a great trip.i did the same passes as you but didn't see sod all, Low cloud and rain rain rain lol,And that was in the summertime last year.

Dave :thumby:

Excellent ride report with some stunning photos - many thanks for sharing...! :beerjug:

I’ve done the Pyrenees in the autumn before and had similar weather but equally never considered the high Alps as I thought particularly the main passes would be all closed and it would be too cold.

So do you think you just got lucky or is this the norm around this time ? I found the Pyrenees in mid to late September cold before midday.

I think average temperatures were a little above the norm but as I mentioned earlier the locals were saying that the weather generally can be more settled in October as things start to cool down before winter proper arrives. :)

I live near to Interlaken and can say that it's been a fantastic summer.
We had no thunderstorms or high winds that we often get late in the day.
And we still got good weather.
I would say that June, September and October are the best times to visit.
Yes it can be cold anything from 3 to 33 degrees with snow or beautiful sunshine but that is the Alps.
Mike
