Buying a motorcycle that has not been MOT'd for more than a year

Another R1200RT bike that's up for sale, the MOT expired in May 2017 and the tax Feb 2018.

Am I going to have a problem purchasing this bike due to arrears? The bike was not SORN.

Is the purchaser liable in any way?

The dated receipt and vehicle logbook (V5) will show you as A new owner.

No, but SORN it as soon as you register it so you aren't liable for road tax from date of purchase until the MOT is sorted
