The result of a gumtree browsing sesion . . . . . one 1998 600 Transalp in need of a little TLC, to keep me busy in the garage over the cold nights . . . .

Photos of my Alps strip down, clean, oily rag refurb & rebuild

This is what it was like in the begining

Nice job Steve, I always liked the Transalp. Looks smart.
Security looks a bit iffy though :p

Nice. The latest and best 600 with triple discs. I bet that hasn’t got many miles on it, looking at the condition.

You just can't help yourself can you Steve....

From another serial Transalp owner, I bought this last year, Alp number 6, or is it 7

Only Alp #3 for me Phil, but I have owned 7 other Hondas with the venerable V-Twin engines fitted - 4 x @'s and 3 x Varadero,s :D

Mileage is sitting at 10389. Many of the previous MOT's showed the bike covering the return mileage to/from the MOT testing station only between tests.
Looking forward to getting the odometer working as it should and build up some decent miles on the old girl - maybe when the slats been washed off of the roads up here! It's bad enough keeping one machine running through the winter, never mine two

My speedo used to play up every now and then and eventually it expired. It was gunge in the cable that built up over time that eventually caused so much resistance that it chewed up the nylon gear in the drive on the spindle. The metal worm gear that drives the nylon gear became seized. It looks like it can’t be repaired but it can. After it happened I added a clean and regrease of this to my service schedule.

That is a lovely looking bike.

Had a Red 1998 and a Blue 1997

The Red with the twin front disks was a great bike.
I will eventually get another one.

great bikes

You might have this covered already, check the output shaft that the front sprocket sits on for wear. Lots of info on forums. I think solution is genuine sprocket and locking tab.

Mr Shelley - the speedo works fine thank you - I just meant that the machine needs to be used and the speedo needs to start racking up some miles :thumb2 I am aware of the speedo drive problems that can occur with tight running cables - been there, avoided that ;)

Front sprocket was inspected before I bought the bike - took the tools with me specifically for the job  having owned two Transalps in the past as well as 4 Africa Twins :D. Since getting the machine home I have fully inspected the whole drive system. The machine has only covered a little over 10,000 miles and the chain and sprocket (C&S) set is, to my mind, the original set. The output shaft is in fine condition, as is the C&S set.

Popped a set of Givi pannier frames onto the old girl, to give me a bit of scope when it comes to luggage. These 'ickle boxes are the smallest option, with a set of adapted Pelicases also available and some old throw-overs.

The DIY alloy sump guard worked out a treat, so now I just have to wait for the snow and associated salt covered roads are clean and me and the old girl can cover some miles :thumb2. Happy days ahead methinks :thumb2 :thumb2 :thumb2

Till the next oily rag refurb - TTFN
