Day 11 – Sun. 4th

Next day at the circuit they had a 69 second memorial silence for the sad death of Nicky Hayden. Every person from the pits came onto the circuit for the tribute and to pay their respects.

Day 12 – Mon. 5th
That’s Mugello finished so now it’s time to head for the Catalunya MotoGP! I’m aiming for the Italian / French coast so I have to ride over that crappy looking Lombardi bridge again in Genova (Genoa, in English) and then west into France. I end up stopping at a place called Grasse (perfume capital of France they say) which is built on a hill with corners tighter than the Stelvio in places.

Dinner in Grasse (I asked for anchovies on top of my tuna pizza and I got them no problem). I had to get my good lady a present so I got her a lemon juice squeezer made out of olive wood. [I had already bought her a silk scarf in Castellane].

Day 13 – Tues. 6th
Arsey always says how nice the Gorges du Verdon are so I thought I’d give them a visit. I’m heading to Castellane (again) to pick up the road and see what all the excitement is about.

I’m glad Arsey likes it but I don’t; hugging a cliff edge and going round blind bends with oncoming traffic isn’t my idea of fun. I’ll add this one to my list of roads I never want to go on again. I eventually get to Millau and ride along, and back, some of the Gorges du Tarn – now this is my idea of a great bike road; sweeping bends at the bottom of the gorge following the route of the river. It’s not as good as the US12 in Idaho but it’s a great ride. I’ll be back to ride the full length another day. Time to find a room in Millau for the night and get some dinner.

Getting up this ramp will be a bit tricky but not as bad as coming down it!

Day 14 – Wed. 7th

I now intend to bypass Toulouse and head over the Pyrenees. I wind my way up the Pyrenees and come down into the village of Sort, Spain. The weather has been great and the ride to here was very enjoyable just cruising along all day. It’s my first visit to the Pyrenees and I’m very impressed; I’ll have to come back again too.

Day 15 – Thurs. 8th
The hotel was very cheap and the breakfast was brilliant. Freshly fried eggs out of the pan and straight onto my plate along with great bread, etc. and freshly squeezed orange juice and bottomless coffee. I’m now ready for a day in the saddle.
It’s now time to ride along the N260 and find somewhere to camp as close to the circuit as I can.

I arrive at the circuit and find a campsite right across the road from the circuit with an overhead bridge for access. Perfect! Unfortunately, they don’t want to let me stay because I hadn’t pre-booked a plot. However, a very helpful young man explained my situation (in Spanish) to the older chap who didn’t want to let me stay and I got in. It ended up there was loads of space once everybody was camped so I don’t know what his problem was – “job’s worth” bloke.

Day 15 – Fri. 9th
Montmelo is the local town where all the eateries are and also the hub for wheelies, donuts, burn-outs and the riot police / ambulance services!

Heading home today and got as far as Rouen when an Ibis loomed up on my right ( a hotel not a big bird) so in I went and stayed the night there.
