Tour 2016 Ride Report

Austrian MotoGP is back on the venue list to I’m heading there and then onto the Czech MotoGP the following weekend.

Day 1 – Thurs. 4th August – c. 620 miles to Ashford
It was a dry day as I rode down to my pre-booked Travelodge near Ashford, Kent for a stop-over before an early (c. 05:00) tunnel booking the next morning. Food was basic but edible!

Day 2 – Fri. 5th
Off the other side and ride a few miles before turning right onto the A26 peage heading south aiming for Albertville. I stayed in the old annexe of the La Roma hotel (as it was much cheaper) which meant I could park my trusty steed at the front door.

Day 4 – Sun. 7th

And, eventually, after leaving Italy and heading into Switzerland I’m back into Italy at Livigno.

Day 5 – Mon. 8th
I left the lovely, and duty free, town of Livigno and headed over the passes again until I got stopped by the Italian customs police at the top asking me if I’d bought anything in Livigno. Only petrol I replied so they let me continue on my way.

After a great day’s riding I arrived in Soelden and found a room for the night.

I came across this biker bar (Black & Orange) but there was a sign on the door that I got a helpful lady in a local shop to translate for me. It said “closed on Mondays”; correct, this is Monday. I’ll just have to come back another time I suppose.

Day 6 – Tues. 9th
Time to leave Soelden and have another pass riding day. It is, after all, why I’m here having fun.

After the Timmelsjoch and the Grossglockner (in the rain unfortunately) I found a room for the night in Malta, Austria. It’s still raining.

Day 7 – Wed 10th
It’s pouring of rain all day so I take the executive decision to have a day off the bike. I get a bus and go into the local town of Gmund where, I discover, the Porsche museum is. Even though I’ve no interest in cars I give it a visit as I have the whole day to kill. (Sorry, I didn’t take any car pictures).

Day 8 – Thurs. 11th

Time to head for Spielberg, Austria for the MotoGP weekend. First, though, I headed up to the dam at Maltatal then re-traced my route down to Gmund and went up the Nockalmstrasse before aiming for Spielberg.

On the following pic. if you look straight down from the bottom left of the second “L” you’ll see my name “Iain SCO”!

Day 11 – Sun. 14th
Sunday night after all the racing is, thankfully, over. My tent was still standing but I got thoroughly soaked trying to get back to it through a flooded field!

Day 12 – Mon. 15th
What’s next? Oh yes, Czech MotoGP. I plan to head south through Slovenia and Croatia and stay, somewhere, past Zagreb en route to Hungary.

Day 13 – Tues. 16th
I leave Croatia, ride through Hungary and stay up in the mountains of North-West Slovakia.

Day 14 – Wed. 17th
I am now heading for Zakopane in the southern Polish mountains before slipping back into western Slovakia and on the Czech Republic to find a bed for the night.

Some nice houses in Zakopane:

I come across a Pension and even though I speak no Czech and the lass at the reception speaks no English we both know enough German that I get bed, breakfast, dinner and dunkel beer!

Day 12 – Mon. 15th

Day 15 – Thurs. 18th
It’s time to get to my campsite for the next 4 nights.
I meander southish through Czech Republic, in hot sunny weather, and early afternoon I reach a village that has an ice-cream outdoor vendor. I think I should stop and buy one so I decide to turn at the next opportunity which occurs just after the sign to the next village which, by pure luck, happens to be where I’m staying, Ostrovacice!

I picked this campsite because the owners had a Bernese Mountain dog and I have one (used to have two) too. Theirs looks nearly identical to my Lewis but she’s female.

Day 16 – Fri. 19th
Later, I discover they breed them and have puppies! I spend hours playing with them.

Having a sleep so it can grow more skin!

Day 17 – Sat. 20th
Fine weather was had by all.

Day 18 – Sun. 21st
Pissing rain initially!

Day 19 – Mon. 22nd

Stayed with a pal in Ramstein tonight – I want one of these!

Day 20 - Tues. 23rd

And we’re home!

Great trip and a good excuse for getting out and about. Mixed weather makes you appreciate the sun.
