Over here!
I think i remember this being answered in another thread, but have looked and can't find it.

Would be grateful if anyone knows whether the seals are available individually. I think they are 32mm and 36mm, seals, but don't know whether they differ from other standard seals. Calipers are Brembo with BMW marked on outside. If anyone knows I would be grateful. Cheers

your BMW dealer should have them in stock.... I bought a set in January this year genuine Brembo (same across many models) comes with a set of pistons that you probably need as the coating falls off and they corrode, if you smile you should get the kit for around £60 a side

BMW don't sell them individually. Nor do BMW parts specialists. Hence my question

I rebuilt both of my front calipers with new seals and pistons from Costwold. The corroding pistons are the weak link and I binned everything just to be done with the job. The Brembo packs from BMW are good kits including the assembly lubricant and it all goes back together a treat. Small price to pay to get it all done and forgotten about.

£70 a small price to pay for one fluid seal?!

It's quite hard work asking a specific question. Lots of answers to a questions I didn't ask. Am I alone in having this experience?

people answer as best they can....

the seals don't fail... but the pistons do - which scratches the bores and if really bad can damage the seals (9 out of 10 times you need new pistons and the seals could be reused.) the james sherlock response if for the same kit

Your response was not to the question I asked

That is simply incorrect. These calipers have a habit of spitting out the 32mm dust seals as BMW independents and dealer mechanics can confirm to you.

I'm tempted to post a photo of my 10 year old pistons after caliper rebuild. They are all mint. However, 2 dust seals were missing and numerous of the other seals are stained.

That isn't to say a full rebuild with pistons doesn't make sense, as it does, but it is to say that what you have written is incorrect.

As per my comment in the other thread, one needs to be careful claiming to have all the answers when one doesn't.

But back to my question - it as about availabilty of the seals individually. You can read it in the first post on this thread

Hold on buddy - people here are only trying to help. Have a little respect, or don't post in the first place.

For £70 you get four phenolic resin pistons and four seals. Decent used calipers will start at about £50 and they may well have corroded metal pistons. Barrel over they you got have. ;)

The problem
When I rebuilt the caliper some time ago my fingers slipped and I pushed one of the 32mm pistons in at an angle. It was late and I was in a rush so I seated it correctly and refitted the caliper. Fast forward 12-18 months and I noticed a small fluid weep from one of the 32mm pistons. When I looked at my notes on the bike, it turns out it is the same piston. So I thought it likely I damaged the fluid seal and would need to replace it.

Single seals
BMW doesn't supply them, nor do BMW parts specialists. The people I spoke to said that Brembo make a number of different profile 32mm seals and that these ones aren't available. Being a sceptical person I found a 32mm seal supplier and ordered one to check the dimensions: https://www.motorcycleproducts.co.uk/brake-caliper-seals-32mm-x1-p-264938.html. I measured them against the original seals I removed when I rebuilt the calipers (which I have in a box of old parts). BMW seal first, generic part second: ID 32.2mm, 32.0mm; width 3.22mm, 3.15mm. Height was the same. Obviously it's hard to measure this part accurately, but from what I can see they are not that far different.

Seal replacement
I replaced the leaking seal with one of the original BMW ones (two are badly stained from missing dust seals, but the other two were in decent condition). I would have liked to try the generic part to see if it the caliper leaked afterwards, but I was going out on the bike this weekend and needed it at 100%. The seal I removed as slight damage, as I suspected. See photo.

Brembo seals
Does anyone know definitively what is different about the Brembo seals from other ones? I don't think it's safe to use any old part, obviously. Also, I would like to know why replacement seals are available for the rear caliper but not the front.

Mikeyboy do you still do rear diff rebuilds, I have a 2011 gsa with play in the rear bearing. It's when you hold the top and the bottom there is movement. If so how much to refurb, based in Scotland.

Alex
