R100gs - Gearbox/Clutch Rattle any thoughts?

Hi all

I have a 1996 R100gs which once hot and stationary in neutral at idle will rattle at engine speed, once I disengage the clutch the noise stops. The noise is similar to a Ducati air cooled clutch but not as loud. Any ideas or is it a case "they all do that"? I will be getting Mikey to rebuild the gearbox soon but would like to ride through some of the spring first if the noise does not seem terminal. The bike has done about 45k the drive side of things seems untouched from new apart from servicing.

They all do that to some extent. Depends how noisy it is.

Quite common. Tuning the engine and getting the balance right between the cylinders can help, as can having the correct (not too low) idle speed.

My 39 year old R65 has made the same noise from new..

Yeah, they're rattly ol things when running at idle, can be worrying till you pull clutch in and realise its not your engine or gearbox falling apart.

Thanks to all for your re-assurance I will be confident to ride a bit of the spring now before getting the rebuild done.
