Somewhere out there.
Hi folks, currently own an 01 1150 GS and thinking of swapping to an RT-P.
I am thinking that anything 2010 onwards seems to have the fuel and abs problems long gone.
Can anyone advise of any pitfalls of getting one. Solo seat is fine as I don't have pillion insurance.
Not to fussed about mileage as I know these bikes can take it, apart from having to get a GS911 what else do I need to worry about?
Should I also consider per 2010 bikes.

Thanks.
Steve.

We have a 2010 RTP Blood Bike. Fuel strip is still an issue, we have had a couple on our bike. The Bike now has 72k, only major issue, our ECU needed changing due to a misfire ££££. But apart from that a good bike, which everyone still likes

Having ridden a job bike for many, many years, I wouldn't contemplate it UNLESS it was the one I personally had ridden from delivery to sale.
There's a reason they are sold, & sometimes it is indeed on time, but often it's because they need money spending on them - clutch, & discs spring to mind.
Usually there are better bikes out there. My two penn'orth.

Thanks Martin.
So that puts me into 07 territory as I don't want iabs. Is there a work around for the fuel strip?

We also have two 07 bikes, the 10 IMHO is a much better ride. Our 07s have both had ABS pump failures, but we had them refurbished by an independent for around £100. Re the fuel strip, there are videos where people zap the electrics with a fire lighter, this seems to kick the strip back into action. But you have to do it with the wires under the filler cap and when the tank is full. Personally I wouldn't like to zap the wires under the filler cap with a full tank of petrol, although I have never seen any reports of bangs :)

or a fuel strip can be fitted for about 220 quid from a bmw dealer and that comes with a two year parts and labour warranty

Can't believe they still haven't fixed the fuel strips all this time. To be honest I'm not worried about it failing but can the failure leave you stranded at the road side, that is what I'm worried about.

Have had my ‘07 bike for six years - came with a police record of all work done up to sale time. 25K on the clock, no issues with fuel strip. ABS modulator failed but that was solely due to my cackhandedness (now fixed with a three year warranty for a couple of hundred notes)

Have removed quite a lot of the auxiliary electrics and connectors to simplify cleaning and increase storage space, especially under the radio box

Mine came from a small dealer near York who specialises in RTPs - will try and find his details

That would be handy to know thanks.

Couldn't agree more and not to mention most have been crashed at least once in their lives.

A long time ago, they were maintained irrespective of cost....:p

Agree with Martyn’s sentiments. Expect lots to be non standard, especially electrics. Not a problem if you are handy though.

Do all my own servicing on the GS and have installed loads of aux lighting circuits so I'm not afraid to get stuck in.
Saying that I'm also considering an F800ST as I can get an 09 for the same money and I'm not interested in speed more comfort and handling sonic can have some in the Twisties.
Still need to sell the GS first.

I managed to pick up a cheap R1200RT-P with low miles, my plan is to convert it back to civilian. I also have an R1150GS which I'm probably going to keep if I can keep the shipping costs down sending it to the UK when I hopefully return later this year. I've managed to buy all the parts I need to do the conversion for less than 200 pounds. If it costs me 60 pounds for an extra suitcase or put it in my container it's money well spent.

Mine doesn't have ABS....one less problem to think about.....in fact it's the most basic model, zero extras just official model.

My R1200RT-P also has an Aux battery which I might leverage off for extra lights an equipment, seeing that's what it's there for anyway.
The fuel strip is faulty as well, so I have 3 options:

1. Get a new fuel strip
2. Fit a bypass to I get rid of the warning triangle and have not functioning gauge
3. Fit a float version

I intend to buy a GS911 so I can re-calibrate a fuel strip.....plus all the other benefits of having it. A new fuel strip in the UK at the moment is 140 quid, to retrofit a float is over 300 quid. A new fuel strip might last a day or until you sell the bike but won't leave you stranded if your like most people and know how many miles you can do on a full tank.

Casbar : Why didn't you convert your blood bank machines to the float version?

Depending on your long term plan for your R1200RT-P colour might play an important part, I find the silver body parts readily available, white is a different matter. If you have a buddy that does a bit of spray painting then it's not an issue......all depends on that long term goal.

I tend to keep my bikes until parts become a challenge rather than just wanting something new. I maintain and look after them and don't abuse them.....my last bike sold with over 230,000 MILES (Not kms) on the clock and still went like a bullet.

Good luck....I hope you get one.

Neil
