My rally TE often does that, i make sure that I don't crash when that comes up on the screen :D

I've had this message several times on my MY 2018 GSA. Dealer says lost connection, but I had it in centre Cologne as well. Since the first time I've had some software updates since ...

I've come to ignore the panic messages.

random emergency call failure messages still occur after TFT software upgrade

Had the TFT upgraded a couple of weeks ago and still get random "emergency call failure" messages on TFT screen. Happens at least once on long trips (e.g. 100 miles ) .
Does anyone with the SOS fitted NOT have random failure MSG appear on TFT?.

I get them and have gotten into the habit of looking at my phone signal when it pops up and it's always in a dead zone. Message goes as soon as I've had signal for a little while so it's not something that bothers me too much overall.

I had come to the conclusion it wasn't related to "no mobile signal" because i sometimes listen to radio via my phone over data through a headset. Several times when the failure message has come up the radio (via mobile data signal) is still continuing to play OK, so there must be a mobile signal. Also when the radio does stop, because there is no mobile signal, the emergency failure msg doesn't come up.

Interesting, I wonder if yours is a different issue than mine then, or if your phone is buffering just enough to keep going when the signal drops? For the message not coming up when the radio does eventually stop, I think that the SOS system 'pings' periodically so it could just be that you lose signal and it's between communications?

Interesting thoughts. I assumed the radio player app didn't buffer as it's a live broadcast but you may be right and it's on a slight delay from the live broadcast (i'll try and test that ) . The radio does just go blank when there's no data signal and just come back when there is signal again.
It's a shame there doesn't seem to be any direct communications from BMW with regard to issues (SOS and other problems) .
Even the dealer said they had to try the software update first before they could contact BMW and ask them what else to suggest.
Can feel a ride out to dealers coming on :) .

Even if it was able to recognise that it was a loss of signal and display a different message it would be better so it doesn't freak users out on a regular basis I think it would be better.

Radio player apps do generally buffer content to cover signal variations.

Also do you know if the SOS function works on 3G only? If it is limited to 3G and the phone is on 4G that might account for the difference in apparent signal.

Tested the Radioplayer app by comparing it to the radio and there is a 20 second difference which could be the radioplayer buffering??. But only 20secs so don't think it should explain the SOS system flagging up an error as soon as it looses a signal.

Believe the SOS systems in vehicles uses the emergency call 999 system and can use any network on any provider that is available, so 3g 4g or anything that can make a phone call.

Looked on the BMW Motorrad site and in the FAQ's there's several bits of info but no mention of the "emergency call failure " failure msg. You'd think there would be info from BMW somewhere wouldn't you ??. Other than the msg itself that says make an appointment at a specialised service center :)

FWIW mine did this on nearly every trip until I had the software update, since then it hasn't done it once. My guess is that the software update just fixes the messages, rather than the signal issues!

Yes, that's what I was hoping would happen with mine but had the TFT software updated a few weeks back but it still does it intermittently. I would guess it averages out about once for every 200 miles of travel.

Not the end of the world problem , just annoying. And it shouldn't do it and give such a stupid msg , what is a "specialist workshop" :), don't BMW dealers count as one :) :)

Asked dealer to check for fixes for "emergency call failure msgs" during my 6000 mile service today. They connected bike to Germany BM and there was an update to the SOS module carried out to fix\prevent the problem. So hopefully it's now sorted.
:D
