Over the years I've accrued a selection of nuts and bolts form god knows where and have always seemed to have what I need in the workshop for bikes (all metric).

However I'm starting to get a bit low on supplies so would like to get a bulk section of common sizes and of decent quality.

Now, in the past, I used to just fish around and find the size that fitted and cut down the length if needed. I don't actually have clue what the sizes actually are so hence my question really........

What would be a good range of sizes to have around and where's a good place to get them please?

Andres

M&P used to do a metric bucket in either SS or zinc (Mr ?????). There were hex heads or allan headed along with nuts, spring washers.

From memory it was £40 for SS

Have a look at screwfix They do a box of mixed sizes in stainless ;)

I would say screw fix as well or buy 6mm and 8mm from toolststion. You can get them in hex head or socket Allen cap

There's more than one metric thread pitch!

M10 has 4 different pitches!

Try and get BZP or similar plated rather than stainless as the latter is not suitable for many applications.

Grade 8.8 are high tensile, meaning you can do them up tight.

Metric coarse is the standard, but metric fine is probably used in a number of places.

Ah thank you, that’s the kind of info I was after.

Any idea what the most useful thread would be to have around for European bikes (fine is mostly Jap stuff IIRC?)?
(Edit - Just saw your second post :) )

Also most common sizes?

I was thinking m6 - m10 (ish)?

You aren't going to need a lot of m10 and if there is a different thread it will be that size which isn't so easy to buy outside specialist shops anyway.
People get all bent out of shape about grade of bolt. You don't need 8.8 to hold your horn on or 90% of the other bits on your bike so stainless is perfectly OK to use. Disk, caliper bolts need to be the correct grade along with things like the bolts that go through the shock, suspension bolts in general. Saying that you will find thousands of people happily using stainless on brake parts and never a problem. It isn't recommended through.
