Took my 59 plate 1200 GSA for a service today at Pidcocks 6400 miles because the service light had come on at 6000. The previous service was Oct 2010 at 3200 miles. (Dealer in Peterborough).

The BMW dealer I bought it from in Peterborough had logged the next service due at 12 months from the last service or at 6000 miles whichever came soonest. They had set the service light to come on at 6000 miles which it did. They also recorded in the service book they next service was due when the odometer read 6000 miles.

Pidcocks correctly pointed out that services are due at 6000 miles intervals from the last service (or 12 months) not at 6000 miles 12000 miles etc. :rob

Hats off to Pidcocks, they pointed out my service wasn't due until 9200 miles or 12 months from the last service (Oct 11). They checked the bike over, reset heated grip fault code, and correctly programmed the service reminder to come on when it should all FOC.

Watch out a certain dealer isnt having your pants down folks!

So what did Balderston's say when you called them to query this? You did call them didn't you???

Sounds more like someone had a brain fart and wrote down next service due at '6000' miles, as in that is the service interval, rather than at '9200' miles. Quite a simple mistake to make, particularly when distracted, I know I've done very similar things.

I've always had excellent service from all the crew at Balderston's over the years, and many times they have saved me money, rather than cheated me out of it. Next time I buy a BMW I will definitely be dropping by their premises.

Brain fart? Whats that then? New one on me, how do you do one of them? Not only did they write it on the service book, they prgrammed the ECU aswell, I didn't mention that they did the same with the initial service aswell, which meant the poor sod that owned the bike before me had it seviced when it wasn't due! Perhaps a case of brain farts rather than brain fart. (Assuming they have a brain)

I could mention all the other what i consider to be deceptions such as mismatch panniers, dodgy warranty etc but i wont!

Nice one :blast

define cheat.

it starts at BMW with the printed service schedule sheet and is compounded by the dealers - but thats a whole other argument :rob

Rainbow do the same....

How far overdue a service can you go without problems with warranty ?

Brain fart = a mistake, an error, an oversight...

Initial service is 600 miles isn't it? Seems difficult to mess that up, or for a new owner to mistake when it's due, unless he/she is a complete idiot?

Panniers - mismatched? Surely you noticed that when you saw the bike in the showroom/test rode it/collected it?

Warranty - on a 59 plate, you're still on the original BMW 2 year warranty aren't you?

If you think you've been deceived then you should talk to the dealer, or if you don't wish to, or aren't satisfied with the response, try calling BMW UK, the number is on here somewhere if you do a search.

Still, like I say, I've never had anything other than excellent service from Balderston's, from buying two bikes from them, to servicing, spares and accessories.

I cant fault rainbow, except they're a tad more expensive.
With regards to the service intervals it could be guys having a brain fart (can't believe some have never heard that expression before) and getting confused with the DOHC boxers which do actually need servicing at 6000 miles regardless of when the annual service was, or have to have the 6000 mile service followed by an annual as well (assuming the 2 weren't close).
As mine didn't coincide at the time Rainbow agreed to let me do a late (by 4 weeks) annual and early 6000 mile (5200) so that I didn't have to have 2 services :thumb2

I thought an annual service was only needed when a bike was low mileage. If you do over 12k miles per year are you saying the bike needs serviced 3 times.

I've always found Baldos to be straight and honest. I could get things done on the cheap elsewhere but I get bloody good service from them. My bike was in for an oil leak week before last and even though it's out of warranty I had a loan bike for the duration of the repair FOC........ Now mention the discount word to TJ.... That's like badger baiting... All in all they get a thumbs up from me. :thumb2

I thought servicing was every 6000 miles or every year, whichever is the sooner

That's what I've always done and works for me

Oh, the joy of not spending £15k on a 12GSA with electrickery gizmo's and service indicator lights

Surprised you didn't give Balderston's a chance to comment and put things right? I have been using them now for 3 bikes and 7 years and have enjoyed superb service throughout. I couldn't recommend them any higher - they are an outstanding dealer who would be mortified to read what you have accused them of.

I have passed a link to this thread to Balderston's service manager.

I have bought both my 1200GS's from Balderston and they have always been excellent with servicing - I am sure if they have made a mistake they will be more than happy rectify it.

I don't think any of the dealers are out to hoodwink anybody.
Its more an issue of how the service schedules are interpreted.
The original poster has stated that the bike was serviced at 3k. This will more than likely have been the bike's annual service which was done on its first birthday. The calendar date will have come up on the dash.
If he reaches 6k in say 6 months then if the dealer inputs all the information correctly, it will generate the appropriate service schedule to be done then.

As mentioned before some service items are done on a time related basis and others done on a mileage basis. Hence you have a date service clock & a mileage service clock. Simples!!

The car side have done this for years. All you do is when you hand over your key its put in a key reader that pulls all the info out of the chip inside & generates the appropriate service.

Hats off to Pidcocks, they pointed out my service wasn't due until 9200 miles

Just looking at that means your valve clearances etc aren't going to be done till 9200miles yet the service schedule states quite clearly every 6k.
Your valve clearances, injection balance etc would not have been done at the earlier service, it was a annual service (fluids change).

Mine's booked in for a service on the 16/6 @ 29594 miles - think it was last done @ 24500, mid Aug last year - the big one:eek:

I'm going for a 6000 service - ie engine oil and valves etc, so a minor one:bounce1

So much simpler:cool:

Cannons

I know from past reading on sites that Cannons BMW in Braintree have a poor reputation for servicing.

However I have found that with my current bike this has certainly not been the case. I had the 6000 mile service done there after only 6 months of ownership, so they did the service and supplied and fitted new tyres for £400. At the 12 month point of ownership the service warning came on so I popped down to see them to complain (I'd had that, hadn't I?), however they explained that the brake fluid needed to be changed, and then again every two years. (They had not done this at the 6000 mile point as the bike was not a year old or even near to that point) However the service manager pointed out that even though the computer showed the oil needed to be changed they would not do this as they considered it a waste of my money as I had only covered 700 miles since the 6000 mile service. So the yearly service minus the oil change quoted £85 and when I went to pay, only £65.

These prices a steal after BMW Battersea (Park Lane Service) charged me £200 for the 600 mile service with me purchasing a litre of oil included in the price.:)
