I did some engine mods last week on my '92 GSPD to raise the compression ratio and give it a bit more Ooomph. I put it back together and turned it over with the plugs out...........fine, put the plugs in, fired up at the second go! Ran it down the road, got it warm, tweaked the carbs a little, fine, so endeth Sunday.

Came out Monday morning, fired it up, no problem, got it out, parked it up, got dressed up ready to go out. Fuel on, ignition on pressed the starter............big 'CLICK'............the classic Valeo starter failure 'click'. Checked the battery to make sure it wasn't flat, earth strap off, front cover off, turned the engine over, stiff at first, then heard the starter bendix drop back out of the starter ring, engine free! Valeo Starter off, (wouldn't turn) put the spare Bosch starter on, fired up fine.

Tuesday morning, went to the local electrical suppliers to see what was available, nothing except a new 'Lucas' starter at £214........never, a Nippondenso is only £264 and they're supposed to be the Rolls Royce!

So I stripped the Valeo to see inside..................

Think I might have the Valeo 'magnets unglued' problem!

A bit of research found an updated starter body from EuroMotoElectrics.com with improved glue and spring clips between the magnets to prevent them collapsing inwards and coming unglued. So on Tuesday evening I ordered the EnduraLast version, $39.95 and $41.05 carriage.

10.00am Friday morning the Fed Ex man is at the door with a parcel, it contains.............

By early Friday afternoon I have this............ (note the cut outs in the body sides for the spring clips)

Later on Friday afternoon I have a GSPD with it's Valeo starter rebuilt, fires up better than it did before!

Total cost £53.49.

Hi Duncan,

err...... I have a spare Valeo starter. I wish I had know.

I completely stripped mine down, not long after getting the bike. It made a huge difference to the noise it makes trying to start and I guess less umph...
Glad you got it sorted.

That looks a great job,, was there any garrantee??.

Do you ir anyone have the part/model number for the Lucas and nippondenso alternatives?.

The Enduralast part has a 12 month guarantee, I wouldn't touch anything from Lucas if there was an alternative, the brand new Bosch or Valeo are both cheaper from Motorworks, who also supply the Nippondenso..............or do you have an inside source?

The Caff Racer's having a Nippondenso because of it's compression ratio!

Would anyone know the weight difference between all the different starters.
Cheers Locky.

The Valeo and the Nippondenso weigh 2.74kg each wereas the Bosch weighs in at 4.6kg!

starter and alternator

Woodautos colne rd huddersfield used to recon starter motors and alternators dynamos they have a massive mill or used to have if anybody requires info worth a call

Thanks for that. i've always wondered what was meant by the magnets falling off. Don't spose you could epoxy them back on if you were out in the wopwops to get you home?

Iftikartaxis - thanks, yes, lots of people used to do them, very few people do now, and even fewer have any bits available.

Garry H - thanks, yes I was aware of that way out but I was looking for a more permanent solution, that starter was built in '92 but wasn't working very hard on an 8.0:1 CR motor, it's now 10.5:1 and working a bit more, if there are spacers or springs between the magnets there is less chance of them being able to collapse inwards and come unstuck, time will tell.

Padmei - Yes they can be reglued, but you must put the magnets on in the right order! Use the witness marks, I'm going to reglue mine and keep it as a spare.

The car starter motors have the springs to hold the magnets in place as standard
Thats why there a excellent permanent alternative

That would be an excellent solution, and I thought that would be the case, but I couldn't find one with springs in this country, my auto electrical suppliers (Parkinsons, who repair lots of stuff) claim not to have ever seen one with springs. That will be an interesting conversation next time! Cheers Garry!

If you look at the pics in the link i posted you can see the springs and the Lucas part number :thumb2

When I have reglued the magnets - at least 4 different starters for folk
I glue 1 magnet then use a plastic spacer ( bit of upvc board ) then glue next etc.
Maybe I should just glue a suitable hot temp spacer with it all !!!!!
What temp would you think it mat get toooooooo in the starter 110c maybe engine temp ??????

I would think if it could stand 200C that should be sufficient, I was going to mill some 10mm ally strip, then drill and tap it and bolt it from the outside, the magnets are too brittle to machine unfortunately I think!

Now that a ten times easier job than trying to drill or fix magnets by owt else
Why didnt I think of that :clap

er

I think I know :D
