So the bike (2014RT) has yet another puncture and got the rear wheel off ready for repair tomorrow morning.

The heat shield has two bolts that secure into captive nuts in the exhaust pipe, (item 4 on this diagram).

The lower one was completely corroded away, and span around when I came to undo it. Had to get a screwdriver in behind it stopping it from spinning.

It's only got 13k and is 18months old, and must have been on its last legs when dealer put it back on 500 miles ago.

Got to collect tomorrow, but need to do temporary repair has have ROSPA test at 13:00.

I'm not sure I can get a nut in around the back.

Any suggestions?

I might see if one of this type of clip nut fits and tap it out to M5, it's not ideal, but should hold for a couple of days.

This is a known problem, I think you have done all that you can and when you can get it booked in.

Can you find a local eng. company that can fit a rivnut for you. That would be permanent.

That's a good suggestion, I have some but not in M5 and steel, tomorrow is wheel back on and temporary fix, I may just get the bit from BMW and then look for a more permanent fix.

Wobble, would a fairing clip do the trick? Similar size to the ones in your picture and they are already threaded. They come in M5 and M6 sizes. I will post one if you want to gie it a go.

Fitted the rear wheel today and tapped out cage nut thingy to M5 and its on a treat.

Photo shows an 18 month old item from BMW and I am totally shocked that a company who has been making motorcycles for so long could fit a sub standard part that corrodes in such a short time

Took my heat shield off last night and copper slipped the fixings and the threads on the bolts. I can see how corrosion is accelerated there due to the heat and when the bike is ridden in the wet. This post is a little bit like "after the Lord Mayors show" but hopefully it will help a few others being in a similar position. Glad you got it sorted.

I had the same problem with the lower forward Torx - drilled it out to find a mild steel clip thread all rusted up solid. I had correspondence with BMW who replied this was " standard fitting"!!! I replaced this clip thread with a stainless steel one and after removal of the exhaust pipes & silencer, spray painted the junction area with Very High temperature silver paint.
