Sorry about the delay in starting the Off Road ride report...

After losing the mouthpiece of my camelbak during the run I must have got a bit dehydrated and developed a massive headache on the way home. As soon as I took the helmet off, I puked into our back garden and went straight to bed...

However, before that I had an absolutely brilliant time with a bunch of lovely tossers on Salisbury Plain and at the Hog Raost! :thumb2

Usually I am always late for any event that involves Clive - but this time I even arrived early enough to watch Loz getting dressed for the occasion...

... and to learn a new technique how to lube a chain
170683612-M.jpg

Chieftain Bakerman briefing us on the risks and side effects of riding off road... (didn't quite understand the insurance bit though - I wouldn't dream of making somebody else liable for any damage caused by my own stupidity or lack of ability... :nenau )
170683705-M.jpg

Then we happily followed Paul Sturgess on his Husaberg to the Plain
170683837-M.jpg

First casualty of the day: Romeo, who wanted to avoid the deep puddles on the proper track. Penalty for chickening out - one broken spotlight...
170683968-M.jpg

Gave us time to admire the scenery...
170684055-M.jpg

Second incident of the day - MiGsel's electrics went on strike
170684294-M.jpg

Some bike porn for your entertainment during the break...
170684179-M.jpg

Barry was the next one to turn over
170684440-M.jpg

Just for the record: how relatively clean the bikes still looked at that point... :D
170684570-M.jpg

Left or straight ahead? Decisions, decisions...
170684696-M.jpg

Looking good for the paparazzi...
170684812-M.jpg

Ooops - not quite...
170684907-M.jpg

Great stunt from Mutley :clap
170685123-M.jpg

But he as well needed a little help from his friends
170685262-M.jpg

I learnt a lot about resuscitating drowned bikes yesterday... :augie
170685389-M.jpg

What a glorious day after three weeks of rain
170685494-M.jpg

The German village - looks amazingly genuine (although our roads are all paved... :tears )
170685586-M.jpg

Approaching the next puddle...
170716411-M.jpg

Some people just never learn...
170685799-M.jpg

Lesson 27 - how to get the bike running again after contact with water... :augie
170686368-M.jpg

On a nice day like this we didn't mind another little break...
170686816-M.jpg

Parking Italian style...
170686180-M.jpg

Yes, Romeo, I am talking to you!
170685887-M.jpg

Paul was getting concerned about his schedule and the remaining tracks he wanted to show us...
170685993-M.jpg

So off we went for some more mud slinging and water sports
170687053-M.jpg

Don't remember a bike with a golden paint job in the group... :nenau
170686943-M.jpg

Although our bikes looked all strangely similar by lunchtime...
170687188-M.jpg

Can you still spot yours?
170687298-M.jpg

Errm, I don't think you will get very far here by pushing the bike, Barry...
170687384-M.jpg

Rush hour on Salisbury Plain
170687453-M.jpg

Look nice, boys!
170687685-M.jpg

Still two missing - Paul rushes to the rescue
170687757-M.jpg

Soon after we were all reunited
170687867-M.jpg

Motörhead (still wearing his gore-tex liner at that point... :augie)
170688054-M.jpg

Stonehenge - from the other side of the fence
170688168-M.jpg

Are we getting tired, guys?
170716619-M.jpg

There are still a few nice lanes to come
170688376-M.jpg

This looks promising indeed... :D
170716794-M.jpg

170716948-M.jpg

But no - the next stop was the - errr, bike wash... :augie
170717196-M.jpg

The lengths some people go to clean their GS...
170717637-M.jpg

170717827-M.jpg

170717969-M.jpg

I personally think a GS should look like this... :D
170773527-M.jpg

Then it was back to the Hog Raost site, where Bakerman took great care of everybody's well-being...
170718728-M.jpg

People were getting ready for dinner...
170718510-M.jpg

... and the Lucky 7's girls had arrived in the meantime!!! Soooo well done, Marion, Lynne, Gill, Georgia, Sharri, Maria, Kate and all escort riders!!! What a fantastic achievement!!! :clap :clap :clap

Archaeo welcomed by her loving husband Jason

Sorry, strangely enough I didn't take any pictures of the other ladies - must have been too overwhelmed by relief, respect, joy to see them all in one piece and happy... Can't wait for your report of the challenge! :thumb2
170718239-M.jpg

It was really great to meet so many nice tossers and tossesses, talk to old friends, make new ones, and to see such a splendidly organised event - top job, Steve (and your support team)! :clap :clap :clap

I might even come for the whole weekend next year - maybe they invent a vegetarian hog in the meantime... :mmmm
170716192-M.jpg

Looks like fun

I was playing British Bulldog with my (4 yr old) son and his friends in the back garden so couldn't make it.

No pics of you this time Pumpy?!

Nin

Great pics.

Wish I had brought my camera but then again everyone else seemed to get plenty of photos of me stuck in the mud or dropping bike in Ford!

I can honestly say that this is the first time ever on a GS ride out that I have come under direct machine gun fire. Only afterwards did Slimbo explain that the yellow bits on the end of the guns meant that they were firing blanks.

Sid

Pumpy thanks for your cash donation and turning in for the day, I thought as I had organised a giude, I had to say something, so make sure your home safe for dinner was a good call :D

Whos the guy in the background in the picture of me, he needs to send me a S.A.E as I have just found 2 stickers :thumb2

bakes

Thanks, Steve.

The fact that you mentioned insurance reasons in your briefing let me draw the conclusion that there must have been cases in the past when people claimed from the organiser's insurance for self inflicted damages during the event.

So my question was rather expressing my disbelief that someone would even think about such a move... :nono

The guy behind you on the right is Motörhead (Ben), the left one's name has escaped me, I'm afraid...

Say hello to Paul when you meet him next time - such a nice man and what a comprehensive knowledge of the Plain and its history. :thumb2

Pumpy, fantastic shots and a great write up.
I'll put my shots up when I've been through them but I doubt they will be as good as yours.
Cheers for bringing back the day:beerjug:

Pumpy some great photographs, brilliant day spent on the plain with you and the other chaps, infact a brillaint weekend

thanks Adrian

Thank you all for your kind comments.

Makes it all worthwhile - having to hog the communal PC in our household for ages writing in the weird idiom you speak on this island... :augie

It was a pleasure to meet you all and I hope to see you again soon - maybe at the East Midlands Do? :thumb2

Rididng on the Plain

Hello All,
In response to question about riding on the Plain: Be very careful; The landwardens, military police AND Ministry of defence police have the power to either report you for offences (of riding on the Plain) arrest you and/or seize and desrtoy your bike, or all of the above. (And you thought it was bad enough on the roads with the normal police!!)

Most of the Plain is off limits but there are some rights of way. So it's best to have a good OS map of the area. If you MUST, stay away from built up areas as you're less likely to upset people and have them note your reg and complain. That might lead to a section 59 letter - an 'off road type nuisance thing' which means you're logged on the computer and have to behave for a year, and that includes your bike separately!!

And yes, they law do get everywhere out there! I've covered hundreds of miles ( on my mountain bike) and can't believe where I've come across them at times! So, you have a warning.

Still, despite all that, had I been free, I still would have gone with you: recognise most of it, I've lived on the Plain all my life!!

Love Katy M.

recognise most of it, I've lived on the Plain all my life

You'll notice that the chap who led our ride and who has also been riding the plain for 30 years stuck only to legal tracks then :thumb2

With respect to riding on the plain, as long as you are not reckless or off the rights of way then there is no problem. I've been driving/riding there for several years and never had a problem except in my jeep which had NI plates.

You do need to stick to byways though or you will get a bollocking or worse. However where there is a graded track running alongside or near a byway, or where such a track bypasses a byway that would be impossible to ride then they are usually understanding.

And bear in mind the the soldiers on exercise are undergoing training on which their lives may depend so no-one will be happy if we disrupt it for them, including riding on legal rights of way if it goes right through their camp, exercise or whatever.

Some of the military landrovers are driven fast and perhaps a bit carelessly so watch out as you go round blind bends or cross tracks down which you can't see very far, they might be one steaming along to take you out. Not usually a problem in dry eather as you can see the dust trails.

I wrote a long post about the various aeas of the Plain somewhere on another forum, will post the link if I find it.

Look at all those gser's, looks a lot of fun, not sure if I could handle mine on that terrain as yet  How the hell did you guys and girls get your bikes cleaned up as they were well filthy

Please explain this concept of clean in connection with bike:nenau:eek::augie:)

New bike = clean:thumb2

Good bike = used = muddy, salty, ACF50, more mud, more salt, blah blah blah:bow:bow

It still starts stops and goes just as well if not better than new, properly serviced, (ok you have to scrape and dig about to do some of this) but honestly, cleaning is something one does to control bacteria in key parts of your home. This is not applicable to bikes:blast

If you love your bike ride it don't torture it with detergent, acid and endless streams of other chemicals:augie
