TOTAL AMOUNT RAISED

Firstly I'd like to say that, having booked early, £50 was not much to pay for what we got this year, all of which has been covered in other posts. In fact I thought it was excellent VFM.

Last year I came only for the Saturday, missed the rideouts and had to leave for home at around 10pm. I can't remember what I paid, but I do remember thinking that I (ME) hadn't made the most of the day.

However, I think the point here is that this event is focussed on making money for a charity that Steve is involved with. It is not there as some form of socialist commune for the benefit of all the 'brothers' and Bakes never markets it as such.

Considering this is a charity event I felt little or no pressure to keep dipping in my pocket. In fact I was disappointed when the raffle started and I hadn't been sold any tickets! Needless to say, I won nothing. I've been on many other charity events where the pressure to keep giving has been really opressive.

I do wonder if there were other ways Steve could have raised some extra cash?
  • If the raffle prizes had been announced the week before would GSers not going to the event have been prepared to buy tickets for a good cause using Paypal?
  • Would the auction items have raised more money on ebay?
  • I can't remember ticking a box when buying my ticket that related to Gift Aid. Could this raise more cash 'for free'?
  • Could 'we' squeeze more out of BMW or other businesses related to the site? They'll only write it off as a charity donation and save themselves tax.
Hopefully we'll discover some of this once Steve's had a chance to tally everything up. I hope he has a good chunk of cash for his charity.

Thanks for being one of those guys that makes the effort Steve. See you next year.

As another non attendee I'll add my tuppence (partially to keep this thread going as its taking the heat of my c*ck up with the Skoda Fabia Thread:D ).

Firstly this must go down as the greatest thread hijack of all time, its only Bakermans initial post that talks about the possible funds raised at the end of the day, then Tuned in's post and then carnage........

I really hope Bakerman (and everyone else), re-reads Garys thread and realises it wasn't a pre-meditated attack as someone has said but purely some feedback which I take it was a result of Bakerman saying that the numbers were down. Feedback should be welcomed unless its malicious and in no way was Gary's thread even remotely with any intent. Tuned in even explains that he hadn' posted this before as to not put anyone off which aghain it was not ment to be anything more than a comment.

Secondly when I read that it cost over £5,000 to host this event that really suprised me. To be honest I had never even thought about how much it would cost but was none the less surprised, (I'm not saying that it was too much, just that I was suprised). That shows a lot of comitment from Bakerman and the others involved. Well done to you all.:clap :beerjug: :clap

I was equally surprised when I read Tuned in's post that it was £60 pounds each for the weekend. (As I couldn't attend due to work commitments I had never even looked at the price). It is only on reflection that I can see why it is £60 with the organising costs of £5,000 reflecting that. You cannot use the arguement that you can go out any night and spend £60 because I'm sure more than 1 or 2 of you spent a fortune on booze ontop of the £60.

I think Aidan has summed it up very well in his post. Bakerman I wouldn't worry about this in the least and concentrate on making sure nobody is out of pocket. I will get there myself one year, hopefully.

By the way were the Bands anygood.

Have Fun

AndyT:cool:

Thanks Steve

It was my first time at the Hog. I thought the cost (I paid £60 not having booked early) was very reasonable for all the food, entertainment and camping. The fact that people like Steptoe are prepared to share their off road experience with newbies like myself is great. I met lots of people that were friendly and best of all Steve probably picked the only weekend when the sun shone! I used to run a single night event for my son's school and the work thaht went into organising that was daunting each year so for Steve and his friends to give up their time (and probably a lot of their own money) I think is commendable! I hope the charities make good use of the money raised for their people.

Once again thanks Steve I will be their again next year should you decide to do it all again!

Goin back to Tuned's post he opens by saying why he thinks the numbers were down, fair enough. Then he makes comments about last year's event and his own experiences and he felt there was not enough of this that and the other and that the cost was too much.

Why didn't he speak up last year and not wait till over a year later. If I went to a restaurant and had unaceptable service I would complain there and then not a year down the line. It's not as if Bakes is someone who could not be approached.

Why wait till now:nenau

Also, I agree with Steve there was loads of bread and the mince left over last year.

Just skim-read this pile of tosh thread.

Calling Bakerman, Calling Bakerman...

I couldn't attend (again  ) as I had work commitments abroad but wanted to. If you let me know where to send a cheque and who to make it payable to I'll give you £20 for not having attended purely because you refuse to have a burger van :clap

............Why didn't he speak up last year and not wait till over a year later. ........

Maybe because he didn't want to get the same retort he is recieving now.:nenau

As said before Aidans post sums it all up - Gary (Tuned in) never meant his post in any way as a put down.
At least Tuned couldn't comment that Bakerman didn't put a price in his adverts:D

I'm still staggered it coast more than £5k to host and again thats a great commitment from Bake's and the others involved:clap

I should do some work now:eek:

i was unable to attend due to a big opperation in june. :tears :tears
if we all moan about the costs getting to events/holidays that would mean the end of our european jounts/adventures/rtw trips etc.
why would we buy and ride adventure motorcycles.
i for one did'nt spend all that money to use it for going shopping/work etc.
i bought mine for mainly fun and in doing that i know it's going to cost me money to see and enjoy the things i do.this year alone i have spent over £400.00 on ferry's [dakar, dolomites]let alone fuel etc.
would i change NO.if i worried about the cost involved in travelling i would sell my GS what would be the point in keeping it.
the people who attended the advent and paid there money all seem happy and thats what important.and im sure the charity will be apploading steve and his team for all there effort.welldone i say.:thumb2

The cost of the ticket pales in to insignificance in comparison to the cost of repairs to the bike :yikes

But two critical questions -

1) Will I be at the Hog next year : Yup:D
2) Will I be a silly tosser in the river again : Almost certainly :D

I did think that the cost was high before going, but having attended I've realised it's worth every penny.

Worth returning?

Well the quality of the entertainment made it all worth while,
BTBR putting a tent up
Mutley covered in mud
Toad pushing his bike
Wizard on his expensive lilo

...and the band was pretty good too:D :augie

WELLDONE

Me,Eddie and Adie came down on saturday for a first look. It was a bit quiet but we could see the attraction of the place. We saw the doughnuts and the fruit and the tea and stuff.....and didnt help ourselves, and weve had a look at the piccies after too....so next year we will bring our tents and stay and eat all the fruit and doughnuts but only if they got jam in em...well done Bakerman.:clap

Our first time at Andover, definitely not the last. We had a great time, including a good soaking in the fords.

There was plenty of food, (including a 3am feast of tea & doughnuts) and the entertainment was excellent.

Thank you Steve, his team & the lovely Becky for a very warm welcome.:clap

We'll be back.

Richard & Gay

Hi Steve and thanks for another fantastic weekend, I work every weekend as that is my shift and my choice, my holiday is limited and the events I can attend even more so, but as far as great value goes this is the one and only event that I attend.
It's my third year and third Fording trip all survived two up, both my daughters have now been and they love it, are always made to feel welcome and feel safe, it gets better every year.
Thankyou for all your hard work and I hope that the money raised will put a smile on their faces as big as the ones on ours.
Chalky

You also get to meet some of the folks that the Hograost is held to benefit for.

How can you begrudge them a penny, even if one chucks a doughnut at you. :thumb2

Bakes may be embarrassed at my posting this but....today the soft bugger sent me a refund for the day I had to miss.
I never asked nor would I.

Top man I owe you another Carlos V:thumb
