Can anyone show me some pictures of the earth points on a 1150GS, getting ready to sell my bike and want to fix the strange problem with the indicators flashing fast when main headlight is on, I think it's somethign to do with the headlight but want check all earth connections and clean first.

What headlight bulb should I have, mine has blown and I replaced it with one I had in the car as a spare.

You could try removing the replacement lamp to see what happens although it should be fine.

What I do know about the earths is that there is the main connection on top of your gearbox and there's a load wires which appear to be connected together with those funny wire twisting connectors by your left knee when sat on the bike (they are covered in the cloth loom tape).

As Ditchwater states, the loom for the front lights indicators and horn runs down the left hand side of the frame. All the earths are joined together in the loom with a big crimp, and a tail from that crimp is connected to the top of the gearbox. From what I can remember the gearbox earth isn't easy to get to. I seam to remember having to remove battery and tray to get to them.

I understand your logic, but I would check that my indicator connections are sound at the lamp units first, if you haven't already done that. Remove and refit the spade connectors might improve connection incase there is any corrosion causing high resistance. Also check that the bulb contact points are good and clean, and a tight fit. If that doesn't fix it, then remove the connector from the indicator module and reconnect just in case there's some corrosion on the pins causing a high resistance. I doubt very much if there is a problem at the earth crimp in the loom. They use pretty hefty crimps and they are on tight. So that kind of leaves the gearbox earth. A known favourite for electrical problems.

The low and high beam lamps are halogen H1 12v/55w.

Good luck :thumb

Check the instrument loom earths, pretty common for those to suffer from bad corrosion and cause instrument/idiot lights/indicator gremlins - all crimped together uncovered in the instrument loom which runs from under the instruments to the bank of plugs mounted just under the top of the tank.

You'll need to slice the outer covering, and the earths can be a sodden clump of verdigris as the outer sheath is loose and water enters the loom and collects in the exact place where all the earths are gathered. :thumb

The other earth point isn't attached to the gearbox, it's attached to the engine bell housing above and in front of the gearbox.
They don't corrode at all, well i've never seen one with any corrosion.

Thanks guys, I will take a good look this weekend, the reason I thought it was the headlight is because the indicators all flash at normal speed witht he side lights on or no lights at all, only when the main headlight is on.

I've removed the headlight a couple of times now and played with it (headlight beam out now :blast) and had the tank off once so will have a bash.

The indicators are aftermarket from the looks of it, cheap crap ones, all bulbs are the same and the connectors in the indicators are all clean and fine.

Someone on here said about the earth but unless the headlight has it's only earth I guess it's not going to be that. I can say I really hate electrics! at least with most engines etc once you strip it down you can see the problem :D

I would like the get it mot'ed and don't want to sell the bike with so many problems for the next buyer to have a to deal with.
Right to the garage :)

Are the indicators led aftermarket ones? If they are could it possibly be that the voltage and relay unit are confused by the low draw by led as opposed to normal bulb which is causing strange flashing behaviour? Would it be worth trying normal indicators before earth hunting?
Just a thought.

A good thought but he did say "all the bulbs are the same".

Maybe we'll hear about that soon for confirmation. :nenau

I have done this. The earths are poorly soldered as a bunch within a big sheath. water gets in and it just falls to bits causing all sorts of problems on the dash.

Nothing wrong with your logic. But your probably forgetting that when you select high beam, the high beam warning light comes on. The earth for this light and the indicator warning lights together with all the other instrument lights and warning lights are all connected together. If your bike is standard the indicator warning lights and the high beam warning lights will have a higher wattage bulb than the rest of the warning lights. 3 watts instead of 1.7 watts.

If you can't find the fault sticking lower wattage bulbs in these three lights might provide a temporary cure long enough for you to sell it.:D
