Ok I give in, nothing like a Garmin session to make me realise I am thicker than a whale omlette!

I have finally managed to perform all the updates and get the latest map set loaded, but I can't find anywhere a "danger zone" upgrade for France for the Nuvi 550. Is my only option to disable the safety camera warnings? I thought I had read somewhere that that was not enough?

I think a pull is unlikely for this, but it does seem to be about revenue generation so you never know, could be seen as an easy £1200 for the gendarmes. Anyone got any advice?

True, a pull for this is unlikely, but routine document and breathalyser checks are common in France. I could imagine that a gendarme might want a look at your GPS just for a bit of sport.

If my French friends understand correctly, the offence is having the position data on the device, not whether you have the function turned on or not.

This is true in many (most?) European countries now.

whats all this about, £1200 what for? I am totally ignorant regarding sat navs I have just bought a Garmin

Garmin replied:-

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

Looking into this for you, please find below a small step by step guide
that I would recommend running through to delete the French safety
cameras off of your device.

1. Plug your unit into the computer
2. When the unit is connected, please click on ?start? icon at the
bottom left hand corner of your computer screen
3. Then you will need to click on My Computer or Computer
4. You should then see a file in here called Garmin Nuvi drive.
Please open this file
5. You will then see another folder called Garmin. Please open
this file to
6. You should then see a wide range of files. Please open the POI
folder
7. Here is where the French safety camera database will be. Please
remove any information in here with regards to France Cyclops.
8. Once done, this would have then removed the French cameras off
of the device.

Once you have removed this information off of the device, your unit will
be legal to use in France
