very good Micky..

Anybody know how many bikes BMW bought into the UK, as they were so expensive when new ?

Interesting post Micky.

Today has been the first day we have had chance to try our Xcountry and it has come up trumps, much more capable than I was hoping for. It is a lot of fun before I even think about farkles.

In 2004 I bought a new F650GS Dakar at, from memory, £5,500 the new G650X series came along in 2007 at £6,500 .... their replacement after a couple of years, the G650GS (a reincarnation of the old F650GS) were back to £5,500 ish??

Dunno how many G650X series were sold, but many ended up at the BMW Off Road School

I know I'd set off RTW tomorrow on mine :D

Mmmmmm :idea

Few G650X Moto's were sold .... now there's a real 'ooligan bike if ever there was

The G650X country is a 'ooligan compared to the F650 twin i had, it loves the back roads woooooooooooooosh :D and surprisingly quicker than i thought, as i found out a few times today :eek ( sorry ocifer )

Another tip ....

Another tip, a reason for having a good battery :D

The bike is not easy to bump start .... the exhaust camshaft has a bob weight. At slow cranking speed the bob weight keeps an exhaust valve off it's seat, so no compression, so the engine can build up cranking speed, then and only then does the bob weight 'cam' allow the valve to seat, and the engine to reach full compression and start

So the engine needs to spin over quickly before it will even think about starting for ya :)

I only bump started my Xchallenge once & it took a long steep hill to achieve it

Not easy

I fitted a Motobatt battery & it was fantastic after that

4 terminals too, so easy to wire accessories to the 2 spare ones

Comes out v well in comparison tests, beating a lot of more expensive batteries

Last year was £47 delivered from M&P

Fits the battery compartment like a glove, same dimensions as the Yuasa

Great batteries

remap

Some good results there on Micky's charts, and hilltop have a good rep.

IIRC did BMW issue another map for the x range? If so, did anyone here have it done , what does it do and how does it compare?

Down in Slovenia / Austria at the mo, and the more I think about it, the mid sized, mid power, versatile bikes are the future, so may invest in a remap :D

Ta :kissy2

With your permission Sir ...

More bling ideas ...

BMW part. Cosmetic but it does stop the cap to the rear brake reservoir coming off, being tampered with, being stolen ...

I know the regulator/rectifier guard looks the part, but if you intend going anywhere hot, and doing slow speed riding, remove this guard before you go.

It would appear the XC bikes have an issue when they get hot, and that is the rectifier/regulator stops working properly (check the voltage readout on the dash!). I don't think this guard helps.

The problem displays itself as a dying battery, which is probably the case. The bike may be running fine one minute, but after a drop or a stall my struggle to start.

Only had this happen in hot climates, (high ambient air temperature).

If it does happen, don't kill the battery trying to start the bike. Leave it for 20 minutes to cool and it will be fine :thumb

You will also notice the voltage on the dash gets back to a level where it can charge the battery.

Good luck with the bike!

Ok boys, enough is enough,we are getting close to 1000 views, time to shut this thread down, we don't want to draw attention to ourselves do we!:D:D:D

I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the 'heads up' :thumb

We have just enjoyed our second full day of ownership. My wife took the XC out first for an hour. Then we headed for Clocaenog forest, my wife and I two up on the R1200GS and my son riding the Xcountry. We rode a couple of slippery byways and then our favourite back roads, and swapped over bikes so we all had a go on the XC on a range of surfaces. It is a very different bike to anything I have had before, and very forgiving. The distanzias seem to get very hot and sticky on tarmac, and find grip that my GS can't find on the gravel covered tarmac. I cant wait to get out again tomorrow.

Had Distanzias on my Africa Twin, great road tyres, good in the wet, but I only tried them once off road, eek! It was incredibly muddy and slippy and the tyres were worn, had to laugh.

121 miles so far no warning light yet and I only put in 7 litres.
So no complaints from me so far...

just fueled up for the second time...........
121 miles
7.08 litres to filler neck
= 80 MPG :eek
FECK ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the future :thumb

As an aside, the Xcountry (Xchallenge for that matter) petrol tank is triangular and tapered. Fill the tank up to the very brim of the filler .... full tank :thumb

One inch below (just 1") and you've probably only filled your tank 90%

An inch (1") makes all the difference

.... as ever :D
