Another early alarm on Sunday with a planned 200+ mile route southwards into Dumfries & Galloway.
-3 DegC up over Breich, but I knew things would improve.
But no.
Another fuckin’ road closure on the A70 before Douglas, requiring a long diversion northwards to Strathaven then southwards to Muirkirk.
The upside to this was me enjoying the twisty B743 for the first time.
Then it was game over with a rear puncture as I headed west again on the A70.
Congratulations to BMW for the flashing red triangle on the dash with a real time display of my rear tyre pressure spiralling down to almost zero in a few seconds.
And conveniently coming to a halt beside a nice wide gateway where I cracked open my flask and enjoyed a banana as I planned a repair.
Long story short - finally found the hole, got a plug to stay in place, unfortunately plug was leaking slowly. Probably due to the hole not being perfectly round and/or the mushroom was sitting on a less than smooth internal tyre surface.
So my 200+ mile day was over. GPS showed me home was only 50 miles away via the shortest non-motorway path.
Got home in one piece with 3 stops to let the Slime Pump do it’s thing for a few minutes. Then I rode along watching the pressure decay till the next time.
And I discovered the hard way that supermarket air lines are fuckin’ useless. Letting air out instead of blowing air in. 2 different ones simply refused to seal onto my valve stem after open the valve. The seals were totally worn out. I don’t know if any car users persuade them to work.
ps - the good thing is my new tyres were already waiting in my garage. The bad thing is they were supposed to be fitted at the end of the year after adding a couple of thousand more miles to the old set.
pps - the CO2 canisters worked OK, but were almost useless compared to the pump. I’ve had them knocking around for years, but probably won’t replace them
