Anyone after cush drive rubbers for an XChallenge or maybe Xcountry?

Hello Nathan.

When are you hoping to close off the order by?

Right, i need to check a few minor details with the Rubber specialist, but i'm hoping to get the mould ordered and the invoice paid for that by the end of this week. Mould production could take up to 4 weeks to produce samples that i am happy with. So i'm happy to take orders up to the point i i place the order for the bulk of the rubbers to be produced, which gives up to another 4 weeks.

Once we have agreed the samples are good, it's then around another 2 weeks to get the rubbers produced.

Now to check the samples are good, i could do with meeting up with someone that has a really low mileage rear hub, so we can try them for fit. My own bike has significant wear in the rear hub, and while the replacement rubbers might not be an issue for me, others with better condition hubs might have a problem.

So if any of you are between Southampton and Oxford, and have a XCountry or XChallenge rear wheel in good nick, and you don't mind me whipping it out of the bike to check to new samples, i would really appreciate it. I'll even put your bike back together once finished :D

I'll try to get the timings that the rubber company have provided reduced, so there isn't so much of a lead time required, but i would rather have these right than rushed.

I'll keep you all posted, and thank you all for sticking with this!

Hi Nathan,
I'm happy to be the "1 address" if that is ok with anyone else that orders 2 sets. The 4 sets I have ordered are for myself & my son.
We've got a business ( steelpony panniers) where we send stuff by mail often so that might be easiest. I'll see if we can hunt up another 2 orders.
Pete

Hi Pete. I'll send you a message about consolidated ordering.

Nathan - I've got one with 156 miles on it that I am not currently using. Problem is I am up in N Wales and have no immediate plans for being down there. Are you up North at all when you could collect it?

Your rear hub sounds like just the ticket! I've no plans for heading north at present, but would be happy to chuck the bike in the van and have a days trail riding to justify the trip up?

Deposits required/ Progress update.

Hi Guys,

I just wanted to bring you all up to speed on where i am with this at present. I still have a few questions that i need to rubber manufacturer to answer before i put my money on the table to have the mould constructed. Essentially i need them to guarantee that i will have sole access to the mould, and any orders required from it will have to come through myself. Planning on getting this reassurance and the order placed monday 25/9/2016.

The mould is costing around £1400 to have made, and what i need to protect myself and everyone else that has signed up to this, so that the rubber company don't start churning the rubbers out at half the price and underselling me. (great if you're looking or cheap rubbers, not so good for me if i'm then £1400 out of pocket!!).

I know this might come across as a bit serious and contractual, but this plan for the cush drive rubbers really is operating at cost, and there are no margins to cover any orders falling through, or some third part trying to pull a fast one.

What would be really helpful right now is a deposit contribution of £35. This can be paid via paypal to DJackaman@aol.com- friends and family please.

Please also include your name, contact details, delivery address and forum name when sending payment, either with the paypal transaction or via a separate email from you paypal address (it will just help me tie things up this end, and allow me to keep track of payments made etc.)

Final payment and delivery.

The 30 orders is the minimum i need to make this work, if i get more than this, i will spread the fixed costs of the mould over all of the orders, so it should help bring the cost down for everyone involved. Once we have an approved sample made, i will work out the final costs for you all and advise accordingly.

Any problems my mobile is 0044 07968 121070.

You're doing a grand job for sure :thumb

What assurances have we got that the final product will be as good as (or better) than the original product please? I'm thinking more in terms of the quality of the rubber used ... I wouldn't think that any old rubber would be up to the job!

Sorry, but needed to ask. I guess others will be thinking the same too. I don't need any cush drive rubbers at the mo (never fitted any despite years of ownership of bike's with them) but being as the X-Country is a keeper I'm quite prepared to buy some to put on the shelf.

Many thanks in anticipation

Micky

Hi Micky,

No problem with the query you have raised- it's a valid point, and one i will talk to the potential supplier about.

The company i have approached are actually very much into their motorbikes, to the point they used to sponsor a local thumper cross series. When i walked in to see them a few weeks back now, the chap i dealt with recognised the rubber item before i even said anything about it, so they should be well aware of the stresses the items are likely to go through.

They were also recommended to me by a friend of mine, and he uses them for bespoke rubber hose and seal production as part of his hydraulics business and has done for years.

What i do intend to do is pass the details of the producer on with the cush drive rubbers when i send the items out.

HTH

If the tooling cost vs customer commitment turns out to be a show stopper (and I really hope it doesn't) would an inferior alternative solution be to get the blocks water jet cut from sheet material? They would lack the joining pieces, chamfers and be a Christmas cracker puzzle style faff to fit. Do you reckon this could be a plan B or total nonsense!

Sounds like a plan forming :D

I've got a 3 day trail ride camping trip set up for 7-9 Oct if interested; starting up here, road/trail to S Wales, camp, day of trails, another night then road/trails back up. Other than that nothing planned, but I am sure we can sort a ride if you are up.

Also, just sent you £35 deposit.

Cheers

Gareth

Sounds good to me! I'll be in touch :D

Quality.

Following on from questions regarding the quality of the cush drive rubbers, i have spoken to the supplier and they have assured me the material used in the new rubbers will be matched as close as possible to the material used in the original items.

They have also been doing this for 150 years.....

Thanks for doing this. Deposit sent for one set. Cheers :thumby:

Thanks to everyone that has paid a deposit so far, unfortunately there is still a lot of people that have said they want in, but haven't sent any money across.

If you're still sat on the fence and have questions, please give me a call or email- contact details below. I'd really like to get moving on this, but as i've mentioned before i can't afford to be out of pocket on this project.

If for any reason the project doesn't come off, deposits will be returned.
