I’ve tried to download and install v4.7.2 on my Windows 10 laptop. Everything seems to install ok. However when I try to use it, it opens up, but an error window appears right at the end of the opening process. As soon as I close the error window, Basecamp crashes. The same thing happened with 4.7.1 and 4.7.0, and I didn’t manage to find a cure. Has anyone found a fix for this problem?

Any help will be gratefully received. At the moment I’m stuck.

I've 4.7.2 running on 2 Win10 64bit machines and 1 Win10 32bit. How much RAM and disk space do you have? Are you using the default database location or a custom one. It's worth noting that 4.6 and 4.7 create separate database folders.

So have I and on a Mac, never had any issues with any of the versions

I’m afraid I’m not very tech minded. I’m letting the installation procedure run automatically so I guess it’s probably using the default database location. How do I identify whether my machine is 32bit or 64bit? And whether or not I’ve got enough RAM and disk space I couldn’t tell you. I do know that since my machine was upgraded to Windows 10 there seem to be many different “computers” listed in the file explorer, and the memory seems to be partitioned into numerous separate sections. I’m sure
Windows 7 and 8 were simpler :blast

Under Windows 10 if you right-click the Start button you'll get a list of options. Left-click System from the options list and it will give you a screen showing, amongst other things, how much memory you have, the speed of the CPU and whether you're running a 32bit or 64bit version. In my experience Basecamp will run on very basic hardware (this machine has a 1.77 GHz CPU which is the Honda 50 of CPUs, not the R1) and 2GB of RAM, which is not a lot by modern standards. If you open File Explorer (left-click the folder icon on the taskbar) then go to This PC it should show you the disc(s) you have and how much space they have. The problem will come if a series of installations have left you with a disc split into several small drives.
Windows 7 was in many respects simpler but it's no longer supported so its use is risky. It sounds as if your computer has been upgraded twice which isn't ideal but if you've paid-for software then it might be safer than installing from scratch. If you've only data (photos, documents and the like) then saving them to an external drive and telling Windows to re-install itself from scratch might help.

Bear, thanks for your input, and my apologies for not responding sooner.

Since my last post I tried updating to Basecamp 4.7.4, unfortunately with the same result. I’ve now passed the problem to the Garmin help desk. There has been some correspondence between us and they seem to be trying to sort things out. I’ll post here if they come up with a solution. In the meantime I’ve again reverted to Basecamp 4.6.2, which works properly on my Windows 10 machine.

Garment have now upgraded my problem to a “Product Support Case” (whatever that means). They do appear to be investigating it; I’ve had several emails from them asking for more details, so fingers crossed they’ll give me a solution.

I do have a little more information on the problem. This afternoon I tried Basecamp versions 4.7.0 through to 4.7.4 and they all acted the same way, ie they start to load, and then an error message window pops up. When I click either the “Send Error Report” or “No Thanks” buttons in the error message window, Basecamp closes down. This does not happen with Basecamp 4.6.2, which loads and functions normally, except with my new Nav VI “Refresh” unit.

It is really hard when you ask two separate questions in one post and then - to compound the problem - proceed to start a separate thread, relating to the second question on its own.

Apologies Wapping,, having added the second problem to the first thread, I came to the conclusion they were two separate questions so I thought I ought to separate them. And the first seems to me to be a Basecamp software problem and the second appears to be the device.

I have done my best to edit this thread to limit it to just your first problem, that of installing a certain version of BaseCamp onto your PC.

Your parallel post on the problems your PC / BaseCamp is having with your new Navigator VI ‘Refresh version’, I have left basically alone, with just a tiny bit of editing.

Whether the two problems are interconnected or separate is hard to tell. My guess is that they are maybe somehow interrelated. Why? We are not seeing posts from bods saying that they are having trouble loading the latest versions of BaseCamp onto their PC’s. Similarly, we are not seeing posts from bods, saying that their new ‘Refresh’ Nav VI is causing BaseCamp to crash. Maybe cure the problem of the loading of BaseCamp version XYZ first, to then see if that fixes the Nav VI ‘Refresh’ problem. That way, you are at least dealing with one problem at a time. Starting with BaseCamp is at least logical, to me at least.

Me, who knows nothing about PC’s or IT type issues? I’d start by:

1. Saving any BaseCamp routes or favourites you might want to keep.

2. Delete BaseCamp from your PC entirely and run any ‘clean up’ software you might have, to make sure it’s gone.

3. Download BaseCamp again from the official Garmin site, following its installation instructions to the letter.

4. Let Garmin install all the BaseCamp updates and fixes it needs to do.

Does that fix the installation problem? If so, then proceed with the Nav VI ‘Refresh version’ issue.

Thanks Wapping. I have previously tried uninstalling Basecamp and loading up the latest version, currently 4.7.4, without success. It has been only been a problem with versions 4.7.0 through to 4.7.4. All the 4.7 versions load up, show an error message, and then crash when the error message window is closed. This happens whether or not there is a device connected to the computer. If I install version 4.6.2, it loads up and works properly with my Zumo 660, my wife's Nuvi, and it also worked with earlier versions of the Nav VI. But I'll give it another go following your steps above.
And thank you for tidying up my postings.

It appears to be an error log of some sort. Unfortunately it extends over 5 pages in the Error message window and it won't allow me to copy the text, so I can't copy and paste it here (or anywhere else). The Garmin Helpdesk asked me to forward it to them and I had to take a series of screenshots and send them by email. And as I don't seem to be able to attach pics here, I can't even show them to you. Sorry, I'm not doing much to help myself here, am I?

There are so few reports on the internet of crashing problems with PC’s running version(s) 4.7, that I can only conclude it is down to either your home computer and / or the software’s installation.

When (if) I hear back from Garmin I’ll post here.

The Garmin helpdesk think that my problem with 4.7.X could be caused by the download/install process failing to completely uninstall the previous version of Basecamp from my machine. They've given me instructions on how to go into the Registry to completely remove all traces of previous versions but they've strongly recommended that I get expert help from a Windows specialist. Basecamp 4.6.2 continues to work perfectly well on my machine so I'm debating whether to do anything further.

Grab a copy of Revo Uninstaller (Free Version) or the portable version ($15). That does a proper job.
Give 4.7.4 a go.

Thanks Redboots, I'll have a look at that

Update: I finally got round to following Redboots’ advice and used Revo Uninstaller to completely remove all traces of older versions of Basecamp. I’ve now installed Basecamp v4.7.4 successfully and it’s working with my Navigator VI :thumb2. Thanks again, Reboots.
