I’m not even going to start to compete with some of the excellent project posts on here. R100/7 having a ful rebuild. Will be largely standard spec except for wiring. I’m a convert to using Motogaget m units so it’ll have a custom loom. This will be going on a serious tour as and when we’re able so reliability will be my prime concern.
Another concern I have, if I send parts away for powdercoat, paint and płating will we go into lockdown and firms, with my parts, disappear?

Nice garage Paul.
Good luck with the rebuild/refresh.

Hi Paul, I guess making it reliable will take preference to making it pretty. The winter after the tour could be spent making it pretty if you so wish and the world may be getting somewhere near normal or at least stable by then. Looking forward to reading about your project and maybe your tour. Enjoy and, as Bubb said, nice garage :thumb.

I’m not going to try to talk you out of using an M unit,
However,they are an expensive solution.
On my /7 I used a later post 85 RT loom, available new, along with later switch gear etc
Ok,so the switches are not cheap, and you would need later instruments(idiot lights are wired slightly differently) ,but end up with a much simplified wiring loom and reliability whilst retaining the factory “look”

Interesting option as I do have a set of later switches. I’ll ‘fess up and say I do want a simpler instrument cluster too. I don’t need a tachometer so I’ll construct a speedo binnacle similar to a /5 and incorporate idiot lights into the headlamp bowl. I’ll bear in mind your suggestion though.

Progress is being made. ‘Bagging and tagging’, old habits die hard, cleaning up as I go. I’ve decided on a ‘m’ unit to control the electrics and an Acewell speedo. Ignition will be upgraded, starter motor, master cylinder and calliper to be overhauled oh! and engine and gearbox rebuilt. Powder coat will be handled by a local firm as will the wet paint. Traditional black and white pin striping. I haven’t decided wether to use stainless fasteners or replace the originals. Probably the former as some on the bike have already been replaced ( I’m aware of the pitfalls).

Paul
Shaw stainless will do you all the stainless bolts/nuts etc if you contact them.
They all come in little bags with reference numbers and a list where they all fit...... very good service IMHO.

I love it when bits start to come back. This first batch from BGM plating in Alton. Bodywork is off to Cycle Sprays in Cowfold. Powdercoat to Kirdford Shot Blasting and engine parts back from CC’s Clean Machines at Puttenham. All people I’ve used many times before and trust.

The heavy flywheel bikes are my favourite. 32mm Carbs are much better than the 40s in my opinion.

A scene of domestic bliss. Powder coated parts collected this morning. Kirdford shot blasting, West Sussex.

enjoy the jigsaw paul, looking good!

seeing them laid out like that without being in separate L and R piles makes my OCD weep :D

It’s spray booth time.
