Hi All,

It,s that time of year again to start planning next years adventure.

We are looking at travelling down into Switzerland for a 2 night stop to do a few of the passes before moving into Italy for another 2 nighter.

I have trawled through various posts (with some good advise)but wanted to see if anyone has been their recently.

Can anyone recommend digs in Grindelwald or the surrounding area. Preferably near a town where we could visit for a shandy or two.

Also looking for recommendationsfor digs around Lake Como area.

TA Steve:okay

Last summer I spent a couple of nights around there, doing the swiss rollercoaster with a couple of friends on my way back from Corsica.
We did stay in a small but clean hotel around that area, they had a small garage for the bike and let us use the ski storage for helmets and panniers. Let me find it... should be on basecamp.

Update: here it is

Oberwald.
Only thing: a bit deserted in the middle of summer. We liked that actually, but I guess you'd like something more "in town".

This place is nice, Foresteria Lombarda La Spiaggia, more of a BnB than a hotel, friendly hosts and the the food is great too

It’s on the eastern side of lake Como about a 5 minute ride from the Moto Guzzi factory and museum

Check the opening times if you want to visit the museum as it is only open for one hour a day

Meiringen was a nice base for a few nights. Sits near where the western end of the Susten pass meets the Grimsel pass. Grindelwald is a daytrip away.

I stayed here https://www.sauvage.ch/?lang=en £150 a night but it is Switzerland. A few cheaper places in the town.

Mandello del lario .... Ristorante Grigna decent 3 star hotel with a restaurant and secure underground garage and 5 minutes walk from the Guzzi museum

Have a look at the websites in the German section (it’s a sticky) that carry links to the ‘biker friendly’ hotels. Then cross-check with something like TripAdvisor. You are not going out for three weeks, so it will pass the time.

Plucked at random from TripAdvisor, the Derby Swiss Quality hotel in Grindelwald gets good reviews. I doubt if they are all fake. Does that look like the sort of place you’d like to stay OP? If not, what do you have in mind? A bunk house for £20 a night or five star luxury.

As Grindelwald is nothing but hotels, it cannot be that hard to find one.

It's not really a dead end as you can go through the tunnel which I think brings you out on the Zernez to Stelvio road, the tunnel is a toll though.

Also: considering one rides motorbikes on the alps for the corners... why in the world would you use (paid) tunnels to get around? :D

River lodge is a hostel / campsite I've stayed at between the lakes, on the north side, at Interlaken (riverlodge.ch)

Anyway, on a point (or three) of correction:

Swiss has one "i" and two of the "s" letter

Accommodation - as I've typed has two of that "m" letter.

I thought you would have sorted that Richard; I'm very disappointed in you.

I've stayed here https://www.mountainhostel.ch/ a few times over the years. You can book a twin/double room in advance and isn't as expensive as staying in a hotel. It's location is a 10 minute walk from Grindelwald and the train to the Eiger is on your doorstep. I wouldn't say Grindelwald is ideal for picking up the various mountain passes in the area but if you enjoy hiking, paragliding, river rafting etc It's ideal.

On the Italian side of the border I've stayed here http://www.ostellotirano.it/, not expensive, clean and comfortable. The start of the Stelvio pass is only a couple km's away but there are plenty of other and better passes leading to Lago d'idro and Garda. If you want a day off the bike, catch the train to St Moritz which is one of the top 10 train journeys in the world.

I saw those but they amused me, as did the use of the word ‘digs’ twice in the opening post. He gained a point for the use of the word ‘shandy’, though I was left wondering if Steve is (or was) perhaps serving in the Territorial Army?

He left us no clues as to what quality of hotel (digs) he might like, which made it much harder for everyone. But hey, that’s a common theme.

Mrs Fatal and I stayed at his place in Grindlewald some years back whilst on a motorcycle trip. Excellent place with great views over the valley. It's nicely tucked away on the edge of town, being about 15 minutes walk to the centre (if my memory serves me right) Hoping to go back to visit in near future.
