Hope this will be of use to folks...

I wanted to add a dual USB charging socket without removing the BMW DIN socket and make the fit look like it belonged there.

Items needed for this

T25 Torq socket/driver
Side cutters
Long flay screwdriver
A load of cable ties
A double sided cable tie fixing pad
NN dual USB socket. LINK THING
NN bracket LINK THING
Pre-made cable LINK THING

...about 45 minutes of your time

To start with you will need to remove the windscreen. It is held with a couple of T25 screws, one either side. Just wind the screen up to the top and that will give you access to the area where you'll run the cable. Its a couple of T25 screws (one each side) then gentle slide the screen down and it will come away.

Then remove the plastic cowl again to allow more access. This is just 4 T25 screws, all with short collars

Fir the bracket to the left side of the screen bracket, you'll need to use the two bolts that come with the Nippy Norman bracket, the original ones are too short.

Next comes your eBay purchased cable

Cut the cable tie which holds the Sat Nav prep cable to the DIN socket, it's just somewhere for them to secure the cable. We will replace the cable tie at the end. I then used a small flat screwdriver just to release the plug from the DIN socket. Don't have the dexterity in my fingers to do it without.

Use the socket end of your eBay cable and plug that into the plug you have just removed from the DIN and then the small pigtail plug back into the DIN.

Then feed the cable through the dash to the side of the windscreen slide

Now I know this is not tidy but it doesn't matter since it's covered by the new USB Socket. You need to take a little noggin out of the NN bracket

The reason being the USB socket has a little knob to stop it spinning in the bracket

Pop the other end of the cable through the otherwise between the dash and the windshield slider

Fit the plug to the USB socket, and wind the nut supplied by NN so the USB socket doesn't move and pop on a cable tie to prevent any strain

Now originally I folded the remaining cable and added a couple of cable ties. Add a double sided cable tie fixing to stop the cable moving about. Cable tie from one side other using the GPS bar as a frame.

Later I ended up cutting, soldering, heatshrinking so there was no spare cable but either is fine.

Replace the windshield, and you don't see a thing

Excellent, thanks :thumb

Sod's law that I just had all of the same bodywork off in order to fit the TFT brace - at least I now know how to do it again :)

Very good of you for taking the time posting this :thumby:.

Brilliantly useful thread, and links,
