Airhead 80-100 G/S Adventure Build

Bit of a breakthrough today - managed to get the first mock-up of the dash done. This has been a massive PITA trying to make a simple plate to fit in the space and get all the gauges in.

This will do for now, and I’ll get it made up in 2mm alloy. Disappointed because I wanted a rally tower, but that just won’t fit with this fairing, unless I start cutting it up.

Maybe should bite the bullet and get the HPN fairing.

Anyway, some progress ….

I’ve managed to clear the decks so to speak, so have some time to get back tho this beauty that’s been sitting under the covers n the workshop for a while.

first job is to fit the rear fender, then I can send the subframe off for powdered, and the seat off for recovering.

Just a basic Acerbis rear mud guard

IMG_4053.jpg

Not forgetting to position it right for full suspension compression

IMG_4051.jpg

Looks ok I guess

Need to remove the two tabs. Not in the right place

But these little brackets hold it on nicely

Looks ok with the seat on as well. And it doesn’t foul the mudguard which is nice.

Next lets get the rear brake shoes, brake light switch fitted and adjusted.

Using the inverted brake actuator from Richie Moore.

Rear wheel off

IMG_4021.jpg

These are the shoes I’m using

IMG_4022.jpg

Offer them up to check they fit

IMG_4027.jpg

All good so a little smear of high temp assembly grease …

IMG_4029.jpg

Circlip and springs, and job’s a good’un

Next to fit and adjust the rear brake light switch and stop

IMG_4074.jpg

(Yes I did tighten up those nylocks!)

The rear brake lever needs a return spring ideally, but we’ll look at that after I’ve ridden it a little and things have settled down.

Love working on these new/old bikes - everything is really simple - and clean!

Replaced the rear shock on my Pan European last week, finished the job covered in thick oily road grime shite. No such probs here!

Then to clear a bit of space on the workbench let’s get the engine bars on.

IMG_4069.jpg
IMG_4073.jpg

That’s a proper PITA job. But now I have somewhere to mount the horn, and different tie down options …

IMG_4072.jpg

Finally, confident that all the trialling of different options at Christmas mean I’ve got the dash bang on, I cut a nearly final option from plastic sheet and fit it.

IMG_4075.jpg

IMG_4076.jpg

B*ll*x, its shit. Angles are all wrong, can’t see the instruments standing on the pegs, and it looks crap.

But it’ll do to get the engine started and get the bike on the road.

Back to Plan A though and we’ll try and make a rally tower to fit.

Right, off to walk the dog and go for a ride on the Pan.

A Bientot …

VERY impressive work and attention to detail. Where did you source the cable and cable stop for the inverted rear brake cable? I assume it's a commercially available solution?

Thanks Pete

The rear brake cable, and holder that bolts into the rear hub are all HPN bits, from Richard Moore.

Right let’s get this dashboard sorted.

First up, make a flexible former that I ca stuff into the space

IMG_4143.jpg

Then stuff it into place and trim to fit

IMG_4144.jpg

IMG_4145.jpg
IMG_4146.jpg

Now transfer to some more substantial card and trim that

Looking good

Now let’s make it out of some plastic sheet

Instruments in

IMG_4165.jpg

Immediately obvious I’m going to have to change position of the ign switch.

Now it’s wiring. I f’ing hate wiring, let’s go to the pub instead.

But before I do, I’ll take a template and tidy it up, ready for the metalwork guy to cut me a nice dash out of 3mm alloy sheet next week.

IMG_4167.jpg

And order up some mounts like these

IMG_4166.jpg

I had a pleasant morning (not) playing with the wiring, trying to connect up the Acewell combined speedo/revcounter/warning light set up.

IMG_4175.jpg
IMG_4172.jpg
IMG_4171.jpg

I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t like it

IMG_4173.jpg

The warning lights are too small and dim, the speedo and rev counter also to small and just look wrong.

So we’ll bin that and try something new. Yay.

On the up side, indicators arrived, I likee.

IMG_4170.jpg

And they’re so cheap I can carry a couple spare.
