2021 1290S

Will it work with a soaking wet radiator?

I would of thought you would need to drain coolant and get it all dry before applying? If not then I really should get some of that stuff!

The answer is yes if you can stop it dribbling out. But ideally you need to key the damaged area if the paint is loose. It's only as good as the surface it's being stuck to obviously. in this case you need to make sure a lump of the putty doesn't drop into the radiator and start circulating round. Again simple really.

I've seen it used twice up the top of Scotland, works really well. Always worth taking a tube

I was feeling for you when i saw it on the KTM forum, I had rad covers on my GS1250 Rallye bikes but on the std GS and GSA bikes Ive owned never had them. I thought after your unlucky incident i would fit the rad guards ! Why BMW and KTM et don't just do this as the factory who know's anyway after seeing that the part number for rad cover sis only for the new R model 2021 I wondered why? R model will b running over rocks streams shale dirt more i would assume and also in doing so will be running at low speed therefore more prone to getting hot engine wise.I spoke to my dealer where I bought my new 2021 1290s and they in turn got hold of KTM as myself and Mick the Saw were both ready to order a pair of rad guards. The dealer rang me back and said "KTM" say if we fit the R guards to the s model and anything go's wrong re heat problems etc its as our own risk! She did say after that she asked Why! as she knew I would ask. The reply was that the R Model had been tested and approved with guards but the s model has Not and it may well have some differences ???? Why I thought the LC8 was the same maybe slightly different header tank who knows! My reply was well if w have a problem like you have experienced at least its on record that we enquired about rad guards and was told that warranty would be impeded if we fit the R model rad covers! God knows what KTM would think to some of the aftermarket ones Ive seen fitted. She did say KTM were on with a s model cover ? But KTM need to know you can make a baby in 36 weeks!

Hope you get sorted

Mine finally arrived. Love it.

I'm going to try making some from this stuff.

You have to be a bit careful because although you might imagine this mesh would 'flow' almost perfectly, if you go to small on the hole size it definitely won't.

Done well I reckong they'll look pretty good actually. Can Always spray black if not.

Mine finally arrived. Love it.

Enjoy - hopefully picking mine up in just over a week :D

Pannier frames - assume yours has come with the KTM/Touratech frames which which look very wide - out of interest what is the width of the frames with and without the panniers fitted?

Cheers

Paul

Off for it's first service this afternoon. Considering an Akrapovic. Still fairly big though.
Rad guards arrived this morning, and fitted. Bit cheap and cheerful, but not bad for the money. They'll serve a purpose until something nice comes along.

Here you go:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/URATOT-Pie...jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

Rad protectors for under £7. Ordered. Job couldn't be easier as there are 4 screws through the front of the radiator to attach them with. Cut to size, remove sharp edges, fit some thin rubber or foam behind the mesh/in front of rads, fix using the 4 screws using 4 drain valve washers to space 2mm away from rad surface - done. Paint black if preferred. Spend the £30 you've saved on beer, just remember me in your will. :D

Edit: AND two of these for the edges. May as well make a nice job.

The pannier frame is 60cm on its own. The overall width with the touratech aluminium boxes is 111cm. Hope that helps.

Wow, almost exactly the same as my old Trekker Outbacks, great boxes and 85L capacity, but as wide as a small car!

My Holans probably only hold about 68L taking into account exhaust cutout, but are a mere 92CM wide - 20CM may not sound like a lot of difference, but it makes a massive difference when filtering or meeting cars coming the other way on narrow mountain passes / single track lanes.

Completely agree. But if you never filter it won't matter really.

Personally I'm a Bumot fan as they have some symmetry going on but I don't love their frame and box design. Too many nasty edges on my old 2017 ones. Not everyone needs massive storage and it beats me why people haven't designed some using decent flow dynamics software.

It still pisses me off they don't just lower the exhausts, not like you see people on 1290 S models trying to go through 3 foot of water, and lets be homest the electronics would all fizzle out long before the height of the exhaust made any bloody difference.

As for filtering, in about 20 trips abroad I have probably only needed to filter the other side of the water 3-4 times, but every time I have had to filter on the M25 on the way home.

If I lived south of London the filtering thing would almost be a moot point as long as I steer clear of Lyon and Grenoble heading to and from the Alps, and keep of Belgium motorways on Forays to the Ardennes....

...But still rather not have to worry about if my panniers will fit through a gap my bars easily clear, with the Holans I would have to try bloody hard to catch them on something, but for all their narrowness the pucks inside the cases look like a primitive solution compared to the outbacks very swish mount system, and the Holan locks are a it mickey mouse too.

Powerbronze have some left - I have just purchased a pair.....and the KTM ones fit the S too

I’ve bought the R version ones that I’ll be fitting to my S. I’ll be taking them off when it goes in for servicing to negate any potential wriggling from KTM re warranty.

Dealer is providing and fitting mine so I’d be a tad annoyed if it then impacted the warranty.

Fitted now. Ten minute job.
