There’s feck all to do in Holland....

Just avoid Antwerp - shithole of a place and awful traffic and roads (in my opinion of course)

Don’t remind me.

I missed a slip road on my ride to Ypres and ended up through a tunnel in the middle of Antwerp.

A F U C K I N ‘ nightmare. Miles of filtering and a lot of extra time.

Kicked myself afterwards for not taking another way to rejoin my planned GPS route.

They’re nearly 100 miles apart !!! What were you in ? An SR-71 ???? :)

Probably got the route from Nutty.

That being said, I once (when in a steaming hurry) found myself stuck in the middle of Lyon’s one way system on some sort of public holiday mixed with a road menders’ convention and pneumatic drill salesmen’s open day, in my GT3. It was a very hot day, when for some bizarre reason, I thought I’d take a shortcut off the motorway, on a route I had done 10’s of times.

PS In case anyone wonders, I was not heading to Ypres, which is 100’s of miles away.

Thanks Wapping.

No problem.

It’s easy to describe Holland as ‘boring’. I guess if a bod demands big mountain views, hairpins upon hairpins or just “Fantastic twisties, mate. I was scraping me pegs when I torched that R1”, that might be true. But, if you look at it as somewhere a lot closer than Berchtesgaden and a bit different to going to Potes (again) then it no doubt offers something.

Accept it for what it is and you may well enjoy yourself. The great thing is that, if you do get bored, the Ardennes of southern Belgium and Luxembourg are not a million miles away. But take care, as some bods here moan that the road surfaces in Belgium are sometimes not the greatest and get covered in leaves in the autumn. There really is no pleasing some people.

For what it’s worth, I spent a day, taking very small roads across the reclaimed land, canals and small rivers between Calais and Ypres, using a small scale map to find my way. I’ll accept that neither of these are in Holland but it shows what can be done. Often the roads were nothing more than agricultural access paths, scarcely wider than my 1600. Indeed, they may well have been footpaths but along them I went. It wasn’t fast. Several times a foot either way would have seen me in the water, with no way of pulling the 1600 out. But it was fun, in as much as it was different.

I did the same thing, going from Calais to Bollezeele. Here, I confess I did get lost, at one point riding along what seemed to be a large flat bottomed open storm drain of some sort. I can’t pretend it was my finest moment but hey-ho.

UKGSer subscriber, (Grant) Grantmac, has kindly shared the link to his website with me:

https://www.motorbiketours.net/copy-of-netherlands-1

From this I have downloaded the many Dutch routes, putting them into one file:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/g9ee9cuwel235nx/Netherlands from Grantmac - UKGSer.GPX?dl=0

As with routes from any third party (no matter how proficient they are at Garmin or BaseCamp) always check them before you hoon off in the morning.

My suggestion would be to use them as they stand or stitch several together into one or more longer jaunts.

If you go further into the website, you'll find suggestions on rides into France and Germany.

Looking forward to having a ride round these areas in just over a weeks time.

This is an awesome thread and a very timely resurrection for me as I am going to do a 3 day tour of Holland in August. This gives me all I need to pick a route and places of interest. Many thanks to all who contributed.

I know this will sound strange but if you have time go to one of the massive flower auctions. :thumb2 I used to work in the one in Honselersdijk for nearly 12 years. It is absolutely awesome just how many flowers go through in a few hours. And plants. They get moved around on big long rows of trollies and get dropped off at the winning bidders section. They then get shipped all over the continent. You can watch the huge auction clocks going backwards and forwards with the bids. I’m pretty sure they do guided tours.
There’s a huge one at Alsmeer too by Schipol airport. :thumb2
It really is worth going for an hour or so because it is on such an incomprehensible scale! :thumb2

Most kind. I have spent a lot of time in Holland since March as my business was acquired by a Dutch group. I am visiting them on 9th and 10th August for meetings but am taking my bike over as transport. The meetings will be in Utrecht or Den Bosch. I guess my question is what should I try and cram in to see a bit of Holland? Best bits? I will need to be in Rotterdam on the Saturday evening so have Wednesday afternoon until then for riding and sightseeing.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

to be really frank Holland is a bit boring for riding but if you really wish to do this then head right down to the South East Corner around Valkenburg.
If you have 3 days i can suggest a nice trip into the North Eifel region
