Following on from the posts where I took the pee (in a gentle way) out of Micky’s tounge-in-cheek instruction not to tell anyone about some great motorbiking regions in Belgium and Germany, a comment about the Vosges in another thread, gave me the incentive to start this one.

Again, it’s nothing more than lifting stuff out of Tourenfahrer magazine, not least as it’s so easy, anyone can do it.

Here’s a start and more to follow....

Used to live there (Egisheim actually), and there are indeed wonderful biking roads in all directions. But keep it to yourself.

And never mention Franche-Comte which has at least as good roads and is mostly devoid of traffic.

Thanks for the thread

Brings back some good memories and must go back

I want to visit this place

The only (I think) concentration camp on French soil and mainly for Resistance fighters

There are lots of Maquis related sites in the Vosges. https://www.tourisme.vosges.fr/en/e...ts/885002538-le-maquis-du-haut-du-bois-eloyes

Related sites include the graves of SAS troopers killed by the Nazis during Operation Loyton. Not forgetting the local inhabitants who were executed or sent to conentration camps.

We happened upon this place by chance when ‘doing’ a couple of loops through the Vosges a couple of summers ago. You cannot miss it as there is a huge monument on the skyline, which turned out to be the french monument to those who lost their lives in the french resistance.

The Natzweiler labour camp is well worth a visit. The prisoners were required to work in the quarry there. The camp is quite small, when compared to the most notorious ones, but some of the barracks blocks etc have been preserved. What we found quite chilling was that you can actually visit the original gas chamber. Not sure that I quite got my head around that.

Well worth visiting Natzweiler

Hotel F1, was there ever a product so misrepresented by its name, I doubt it. Closer to a prison cell in my imagination/opinion. I have used them in France and Belgium out of desperation, got in late, left early. It’s hard to find anything worse.

Something that puts the lie to the oft spouted.... “Never book nuffin’ mate, loads of hotels. Wing it” or at least highlights the problem that can be encountered. But hey, it’s maybe better than a ditch and many bods seem to like them.

I might start a chain of hotels in France for GS riders.
How about Hotel Beurre Au Frigo ?

Do be sure to charge them for parking, if only to hear the howls of outrage, when three blokes have to divide five euro by three.

It’ll be one of the big selling points

#compagnondemotard #parkingsécurisé

There’ll be a set menu.

Steak et FRITZ served well done.

Ketchup sachets €1 each.

Natsweiler Struthof is definitely worth a visit, there is the camp and then the gas chamber which is a little way down the road in the woods, they did some of the testing of Zyklon B here before generalizing its use elsewhere

This place actually disturbed me more than Auschwitz for some reason, it’s a place of absolute horror in a beautiful setting

As an aside, some of the stone quarried by prisoners was used to build the huge edifices at the Zeppelin field in Nuremberg, which is also well a worth visiting
