Part of my travels in ‘19 was supposed to be a large chunk of the Morvan but bike issues cut that part short. But I saw enough to make me want to go back :

In the top North west corner of the Morvan you will find the home of the Marshall de Vauban. in the 17th century It was here that the illustrious engineer produced the studies and plans for over three-hundred structures and strongholds for the kingdom of France, worth a visit if you are visiting Vezelay as its close.

Thank you, both.

I hope to stay in Quarre les Tombes on my next venture to the Morvan.

Quiet little town, like so many in France on a weekday, but i did manage to find a tea spot ;)

Hotel du Nord is one of the places we have stayed at in Quarre les Tombes, i would never recomend hotels as its a very personal thing, all i will say is we enjoyed our stay for 2 nights, breakfast was good imho.

That’s the place, Quarré-les-Tombes. I have been through the large village several times, when staying in Avallon. I fancy trying it out or trying Lormes, where I have stopped at the cafe / bar lots of times. Anywhere really on a crossroads, with a half decent hotel and bar.

The advantage of the hotel du Nord, is that it’s right in the village. There is a good Logis (le Morvan) just down the road (walkable) but that seems to be fully booked for the night I want in July. The hotel du Nord has a sister hotel and restaurant, about three miles outside the village.

I like villages like Quarré-les-Tombes and Lormes, as they have a cafe, hotel, a couple of shops, chemist and whatever. Just enough to sort out most things. Quarré-les-Tombes also has an automatic petrol station, which is a bonus. Ever keen as I am to start the day on a full tank.

It’s certainly an interesting area to visit, quite unusual geographically, with its lakes, hills and woods. You can also make a day out by riding across to the Côte d’Or between Dijon and Chatillon-sur-Seine.
